When your companion is shot your first reaction should not be to reach for Facebook Live and record their death, it should be to practice trauma first aid, apply pressure to the wounds, etc. I get it, but Wow! that would not be my reaction at all.
Secondly: I’m sure for many #BlackLivesMatter works great - social media makes more people aware of the situation, gives us a common language, etc. But when you look at the statistics, black lives make up less than a 1/3 of all police killings. More shocking is the fact that almost the same percentage showed signs of mental illness. In fact, the one person I know personally killed by police, Lane Lesko, was a white male, age 19, who had mental illness. The other local, recent police killing was a black woman, Aura Rosser, who had metal illness, and a record with the AAPD as such. So which pin should I wear?
BlackLivesMatter ?
MentallyIllLivesMatter ?
MaleLivesMatter ?
AllLivesMatter ? Not to be confused with AllLivesMatterExceptCertainUnbornBecauseProChoice
My NRA instructor in the state CPL class told us that the correct thing to do when pulled over while carrying, open or concealed, is to immediately, after safely stopping the vehicle, place the gun in clear view on the dash with the action open, and have your CPL and License waiting to hand to the officer as he/she approach the vehicle. Best is to have your hands out the window holding the two IDs. They never taught us anything about filming the stop for Facebook Live.
She had a freaked-out cop still pointing his gun into the car and screaming at her. Pretty sure she didn’t want to make any kind of movement in his direction. But maybe you can write to her and tell her what she should have done; I’m sure she’d appreciate it.
ETA: I have to confess that I had only watched a little of the video because it was just too hard (poor me). But after having time to do some more reading tonight, I have found more than one account that states that one of the things the police officer was screaming at her was to keep her hands where they were. So . . . there’s that.
And I believe the most correct thing of all to do when pulled over while carrying is: be white.
When your companion told police that he has a gun on him, and that officer is still pointing the gun in your general direction, first aid attempts on your dying boyfriend are quite problematic.
I have never EVER heard anyone in CCW land recommend placing your weapon out in full view prior to the officer making contact. Ruffling around with your person while the officer is walking up to make contact isn’t going to do anything but put them on high alert. Your instructors advice seems really really really BAD. Please seek other opinions.
Maybe they should have done. I can only praise Ms. Reynolds presence of mind in streaming this. Without it, Mr. Castile would be yet another anonymous statistic in a looooooong line of them.
Seriously, I had to spend 2 years, and several tens of thousands of US dollars in order to be “properly credentialed” to reset people’s passwords, and to recover data off of busted HDDs. I’ve spent another 2 years learning how to make people happy with the shittiest situations at work. If the cops can’t live up to that then they deserve absolutely none of my respect whatsoever.
This isn’t a pro or anti gun statement, it’s a statement of common sense:
As long as there’s more guns than people in the US, schools need to teach students how to interact with police, how to handle and safe a weapon, and police academies need to teach police how to interact civilly with civilians.
There’s a lot of important, even life-saving things school fails to teach. It’s insanity.
I don’t know the laws of my country. Even remotely. I know parts of the constitution. I know locally I can smoke weed and not be arrested by state, county or town cops, but federales can still scoop me up. I don’t know if I’m accidentally credited an extra $2000 if I have to report it to my bank, the person who credited it or to shutup, legally.
But hey, I know that Log2(64) = 6, and that 10! = 3628800
Even assuming every U.S. citizen is annually certified in trauma first aid:
1) that person would have to have the leeway to administer such aid (she didn’t) 2) that person would have to have immediate access to equipment and supplies for such aid (see #1) 3) that person would know that gunshot wounds to the torso are not boo-boos for which applied pressure will reduce or halt exsanguination

Michigan is one of the 11 “duty to inform” states, but the above that is a very risky series of actions; personally I cannot believe an NRA instructor would teach you something so suicidal as the above.
What to do when pulled over while carrying depends on whether you live in a “duty to inform” state, but doing any sort of rummaging around for anything (ID, insurance, whatever) is not recommended. In some states, CHL/CPL status comes up when the police run your plate, in some states, no CHL is needed.
As for the last sentence, many people recommend recording interactions with the police (where legal), but you don’t want to be digging out your phone and launching an app at the moment of a traffic stop. Get a low-profile DashCam with “parking mode” (continues to record with ignition off).
According to politifact: “Over the span of more than a decade, 2,151 whites died by being shot by police compared to 1,130 blacks.”
However, since black people make up 12% of the population, doesn’t that seem to hint at something?
Yes, black people make up 12% of the population, but make up 43% of the offenders who kill police officers. Perhaps this hints at the same thing as Wikipedia’s “According to the US Department of Justice, blacks accounted for 52.5% of homicide offenders from 1980 to 2008”?
Even hinting that these statistics are meaningful will get you called a racist, I suggest focusing on blaming the NRA instead, a more politically correct target.
When doing a root-cause analysis, you typically can’t stop at the first three "why"s. You’re going to need to get to five or more before you start seeing something actionable.
What makes you think the cops would have allowed her to do this? It’s likely any intervention from her part would have just ended with another dead body.
She was not in a position to save his life, but she was in a position to make sure his death was not swept under the rug. She succeeded.
I don’t think that the cop would have let her touch him because the cop knew the victim had a gun and at one point he yells at her to keep her hands visible. You also assume this woman (as well as the general population) has been trained in trauma first aid. The person or persons who should have applied first aid are the police.
Rosser was the first person killed by AAPD since sometime in the 80’s. The way you wrote your comment, one could easily get the impression that the police are gunning people down with regularity in Ann Arbor. Oh, and the acquaintance of your was shot in New Hampshire, not Michigan.
