Well, Proud Boys are definitely a sub-group of incels. (Not all incels are Proud Boys - many are affiliated, or their sympathies lie, with other fucked-up groups.)

For further “not over there” details they were founded in Brooklyn. And hate tourists or not Portland has long associations with Neo-Nazi and White Supremecist groups. There’s reasons they want to be technically based there.
To the extent that they’re not really centered anywhere at the moment, it seems to be a result of McInnis cutting ties for ass coverage, and the large numbers of arrests among their leadership.
You know what you’re right. I just don’t neccisarily see the distinction beyond one being easier to swallow for CNN.

I think the only real distinction is the tongue-in-cheek deniability. “We don’t HATE anyone, we just LOVE Western Culture!” (Forget that they have profound ignorance about many aspects of the culture(s) they profess to love).
It’s a lot like how modern-day White Supremacists claim that their organizations are about “loving White people” rather than keeping anyone else down.

it’s weird how, for an organization that claims to love western society, they sure seem to hate ideas that western societies codified, like, uh, socialism, queer studies, feminist studies…
it’s almost like the main thing that unites the proud boy membership is their hatred of women and leftists. (while the main thing that unites the proud boy leadership is their overwhelming whiteness, to the point that their executive council who has all the power in their terrorist organization, is exclusively white)

Of course the version of “Western Society” they idealize never actually existed.
They think the Roman empire was so successful for so long because it was some kind of all-white utopia, whereas the truth is that one of the key factors of the empire’s success and longevity was that it was a relatively integrated society that absorbed the people, knowledge and traditions of the lands it governed rather than simply trying to replace them with its own.
These “Western Chauvinists” would probably be horrified if they saw how diverse ancient Roman society really was.
