If the Union had let the Confederates go, that wouldn’t have satisfied Confederate war aims.
They would still have wanted to expand slavery into the territories, or Mexico, or Cuba, and would still have demanded suppression of abolitionist groups in the north, enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act in the north, etc.
If Lincoln had given up Fort Sumter, the Fire-Eaters would have taken it for a sign of weakness. It’s hard to tell how far they would have pushed, but I don’t think Lincoln could have avoided the war, once he was in office, and the earlier the conflict, and the weaker the Confederacy at its outset, the better the Union chances.
Lincoln: “Come in, Mr. Douglass! I have news from the front. The Confederates are proposing to stand down their military as long as we leave them to their own devices and don’t force them to end the practice of slavery. What are your thoughts?”
