Republican Steve King, rebuked over racist remarks, compares himself to Jesus

…so that we can start building these nice guillotines.

He only looks like he’s been dead for three days.

I wish I could find the article now, but a few months ago I read something that argued that claiming to be an evangelical christian is becoming more of a political identifier than one of actual religious belief. IIRC surveys of evangelicals revealed that even those who identify as such rarely attend church. Add to that the nature of evangelical Christianity not having a specific canon or authority structure… well pretty soon JC can be anything you want him to be!

I’d settle for a (bad) magician.

At least he would be entertaining and fun at parties. I’d be willing to bet that Mr King is not. You know, with all that bleeding and crying on and on about how he doesn’t want vinegar to drink anymore.

I find that the gospel has been weaponized quite often over the course of history. Very vividly in that loveley little story about the walls of Jericho. “Believe in me and I will burn their huts down” to put into modern parlance

For me the most telling moment on this was an exchange between Paul Ryan and the American Nuns. The nuns lambasted his economic policies for being unchristian, and he replied that charity and helping the poor and all that stuff wasn’t the only version of christianity. It was a rare moment of honesty where the republican christian actually acknowledged that his “Christianity” was more influenced by the atheist teachings of Ayn Rand then the actions of Jesus

OK, so can we just crucify him to death?

It’s weird he felt he had to show his hand that baldly. Usually you just get “Well, voluntary, Christian charity is totally different from my wealth being redistributed to heathens at the point of a government gun” hair-splitting bullshit.

I’m still waiting for right wing Christians to read Acts 4:32-5:10 and follow it’s teachings.

The Believers Share Their Possessions

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Ananias and Sapphira

5 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.

3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. 6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.

7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”

9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

St Peter was a proto-anarchocommunist.

And would have voted for the more progressive candidate? Hated rich people? Believed in welcoming refugees? And had dark skin? And didn’t even speak English?

The whole sell-your-stuff-and-give-me-every-cent thing is a little less anarchocommunist and a little more cult leader, if you ask me. I can picture all the believers sharing their bread while Peter stashes the gold. The part where Peter beats them to death they die mysteriously reinforces that for me.

I swear I’ve been seeing versions of this comment on several threads lately. Can’t seem to find them now. Don’t know if they have all been by the venerable 281 and have been deleted or if there are a smattering of low level trolls lurking about.

Dude, the Biblical version of Jesus was already the best guy to have at parties.
