Richard Spencer says that antifa sucked all the fun out of college appearances, calls it quits

This, by the way, is the central problem that is so obvious about Spencer – even when he pretends to be “merely your run of the mill racist who thinks a white ethnostate solves everything” – he can’t F—KING accomplish that in any real way without reprehensible violence.

Godwin’s law does not apply… he really is a kind of Nazi.

I take your point, and I would agree, except I think that people can claim to be motivated by good causes when lashing out thuggishly. It’s why we have a civil society with laws; it’s not perfect, don’t get me wrong, but it’s the best tool we have.

That, and actively, locally, trying to nudge people in the right direction. It can work. It takes some concentrated effort, but I’ve seen racists give up their godawful views, with enough time and persuasion.

But if you burn a car in some riot, that racist isn’t going anywhere, if anything, they feel justified in their outlook.

Riots where cars are set ablaze are not limited to racists or those who oppose them.

That happened in Seattle, after a Superbowl win a few years back.

Condescend all you want, that doesn’t make your repeated attempts to derail the topic any more successful.

It’s clear you don’t support running up and punching Nazis.

PROTIP: Nobody expects you to support that, or even cares whether you support it or not.

Going on and on about how BAD it is goes beyond “not supporting.”

Are you a “bad person” if you OPPOSE the punching of Nazis?

Maybe when Nazis are getting punched you could at least stay out of the way.

I agree ENTIRELY with the sentiment.

But if you study history (I have), I would suggest that PRACTICALLY speaking, this approach backfires.

There are plenty of things in the world that function more paradoxically than we expect – lots of ways we try to make a change for the better, and end up making things worse.

That does not mean one does not resist – for example, I think we start locally, by ensuring friends and families do not carry contemptible ideas in their heads and racial hatred in their hearts.

After all, the nasty truth about Nazi Germany is that it wasn’t just one villain, there was a groundswell of support…

Of course he was a Marxist, come on now…

We have a few here who dabble in history. Just ask @anon61221983!

As if those who genuinely need enlightening the most would ever listen to our Mindy; 9 times out of 10 they’ve already dismissed what she has to say simply because she’s female.

Historically bombs and guns and knives and killing has worked extremely successfully at getting rid of nazis. We had a whole generation named “the greatest” they were so good at killing nazis.

During. Wartime.

I’m talking about stopping it before it mainstreams.

Otherwise, I agree.

I’ve said this a million times in this thread… ok, maybe not a million, but A LOT. ; )

Before the UK was at war with the nazis, Neville Chamberlain tried to be nice and reasonable with nazis. Look where that got him.

Treating fascists with respect and dignity just makes it easier for them to kill the vulnerable minorities and then eventually you.

The Nazis never went mainstream WITHIN the UK.

Can we at least constrain the conversation to what we’re talking about – how to prevent a movement from gaining legitimacy in mainstream politics WITHIN a given country.

They already have “mainstream legitimacy”. They’ve infiltrated law enforcement and the highest levels of government already. They no longer are vying for a spot on the news. They’re newsmakers.

How’d we go from punching Spencer in the face to burning entire rows of cars?

If you really want to see that slippery slope you’re so fond of, try looking in the mirror?

Look it up, antifa rioters have been responsible for this behaviour before.

False equivalence is false

that’s not how debate works. Even ordinary arguments require ordinary evidence. Yours to share. [citation required]
