St Louis couple point guns at peaceful protestors on street by mansion

So I guess this is where we cite “never point a firearm at anything unless you wish to destroy it.” Might be that he following that rule though. Both of them are clearly idiots. Law school did not do much for them.

Agreed, but the north also had structural segregation issues. Saying “it’s the south” ignores history, because it reinforces the stereotype that it was southern whites who were the sole perpetrators of racist structures, when that’s not remotely the case. Racism was and remains a nation wide problem. Some of the biggest spots of white supremacist activity today are in deeply blue states - Boston has a deep history of racism, as do both California and Oregon.

the Southern vs. Northern stereotypes about racism, you’re creating a massive blindspot in your thinking

And I believe that, if we fail to account for real cultural differences between Yankee and Dixie social mores, then we will wind up with blindspots just as big and pernicious. Pretending that there aren’t differences doesn’t help the cause just the same as pretending that racism acts exactly the same in every place doesn’t help the cause.

Playing into the stereotype of Missouri as the Show Me State, can you show me where I recused racism in the North? Where did I say that it was uniquely Southern, perpetuated only by Southern whites, or wasn’t a problem in other places?

Correction appreciated and forwarded to my local friend.

You said “southern” = racist structures. I’m arguing it’s not the case. If that’s not what you meant, it’s not clear from your OP.

I just refuse to give “southernness” over to white supremacists, especially since so much of our civil rights history is right here.

Law school, AIUI, is intensely specialized education. It teaches you a lot about a very narrowly focused group of subjects. If you go into law school as a blinkered idiot, you come out as a blinkered idiot who knows how to law, and that’s it.

Yes, I’m sure the healthy and happy 27-year-old man who threw tear gas canisters back at police instigators of violence to keep them away from his kids “killed himself”, and that the Ferguson Police investigation of his death was entirely above-board.

Pretty much every prominent voice from the Ferguson protests is dead now. I’m sure that’s 100% a coincidence.

This is exactly what they want. He wants to live in a fantasy world of white master slaughtering uppity black people (not going to use the word they’re thinking), and just from seeing her expression, I’m going to go with “genuine brainwashed fear that the (dark skinned) hordes are at the gates” (literally). That’s not anger on her face, that’s hysterical fear…

At peaceful protestors. Not on this couple’s property, but marching along government property expressly made for the purpose of passage of people and vehicles.

Kind of makes you wonder if the response would have been the same if it was the local white supremacist group having an organized march by their gates…

not sure if it was mentioned up-thread (i scrolled until my carpal tunnel started hurting), but someone on twitter dubbed them Bonnie & Clod, and i think it’s brilliant.

Oregon may even be the worst, Black people were banned from entering the state by constitution, and the last explicitly segregationist laws weren’t rescinded until 1926.

ETA: to obviously be followed by decades of racist laws, policies, developments that we all know fairly well (red-lining etc) and in some instances provided the case study for how to continue segregation in the post civil rights era.

Is Oregon also “culturally southern”? :woman_shrugging: It’s just white American culture…
