Tennessee GOP pushes bill to eliminate age requirement for marriage

“My name is Matt Gaetz, and I am so fucking horny for this bill.”

You have to ask what the driver is for this bill.
Looks to me like the GOP is trying to legislate away statutory rape because perhaps some of their members or their friends are committing it?

Also as far as I can tell none of the states that lack laws stating a specific age requirement once had such laws and then made a conscious choice to do away with them.

This is all part of their plan to reduce life expectancy back down to Medieval levels.

I didn’t know that “Think of the children” meant that.

This is just a cynical ploy to court the votes of the large and important child-marrying demographic.

The fascists in the US are unwilling to live in a country where LGBTQ people have rights, so they are doing everything in their power to eliminate those rights.

The Deseret News, huh? Sure this isn’t a ‘minimum number of wives’ graphic? I see Utah coming in at 15.

Here’s the proposed bill:

HB0233.pdf (61.6 KB)

As you’ll see, it repeals various sections of the existing marriage law.

which is here:

Including the requirement for a license and the minimum age at which such a license can be applied for (§36-3-105).

And all the bits dealing with how marriages are performed.

So far, potentially a welcome step towards the separation of church and state. No state interference in marriage, yay!

Then Section 4 of the proposed bill throws in the real ratfuckery.

“where the people of Tennessee have spoken on the definition of marriage by referendum
interpreting the Constitution of Tennessee, the circuit court’s jurisdiction shall be limited to those principles of common law consistent with the import of those votes by the people”

And the same would apply in the Chancery Court

Essentially Gilead.

Pretend to take marriage out of the civil realm but then impose a requirement on the civil power to enforce whatever religious crazy they manage to get a bunch of religious nutters to agree on.

Yeah, in a nutshell, yeah. I would only suggest adding women, racial minorities and immigrants to that.

Anyone who they define as “other” is a subhuman and may be allowed to exists only insomuch as they serve the needs of the “True Americans(R)” and no more than that. Should they become inconvenient, say by acting like they are actual people, they must be promptly subjugated. And yeah, I hate it. A lot.

i think, if the GOP can’t keep their own in check, maybe POTUS should have the DOJ investigate the entire party for child abuse/endangerment/etc.

also, maybe someone should let the pizzagate believers know about these particular lawmakers.

For real though. It’s about time some of these fuckers got locked up.
