The Gallery of Just Plain Assholes (Part 1)

The 900k is probably has a big impact in the city budget, but if that includes everyone, it means less than 15k per victim.
It seems inadequate not only because of the direct damage but also because

According to the SCHR, some of those arrested lost jobs, scholarships and other opportunities.

If the victims were white, the settlement would likely be much higher.

Minor kvetch here, but too many people think Obamacare was just about “free” health insurance so I want to correct this. A while ago I got insurance through the ACA but I still paid for it. The benefits of that act to me, as a well paid employed person with no company-plans, were that it expanded the marketplace for me. I had access to more plans than I did prior to the ACA. So I got my insurance because of Obamacare, but it was by no means free.

Yes. In context - it’s required in CA, OR, and WA. :+1:

Yeah. Been there, done that. Halfway decent plans are quite expensive. More than some equivalent employer-provided plans, even factoring in the employer contribution.

Yep. And if you live in a rural, “old” State like Maine, prior to the ACA there was only one provider for those of us on our own. ACA fundamentally changed the landscape for us. I don’t think it went far enough, but it definitely improved things.

Yes, I know it isn’t free and it’s mandated in CA. Underemployed professionals have to purchase their own insurance, unless they make so little that they meet the the state’s poverty cut off (which certain grantees may qualify).

I was pointing out that the way this job description is written makes me think that UCLA was not really looking for outside candidates. They probably have someone in mind who is currently working and paid through a different source (without insurance), but they are mandated by CA law to post the position as being open.

Same-sex relationships have been observed in over 1,500 species, including domestic cats and dogs

Of all the species in the world, however, homophobia is found in just one.

The dog is probably better off in the long run.

Awww! I love the reminder about Sphen and Magic in the article :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
The main subjects, though, don’t deserve the love of a dog. I hope he finds an awesome new home worthy of him.

According to the report, the possibility that a civil war is coming is increasing as the far-right grows increasingly angry about their lessoning power over the country.

Maybe the 2009 DHS report warning of right wing radicalization shouldn’t have been buried to appease Republicans.
