āIāve seen all sorts of comments, all sorts of threats,ā Escalona said on Monday. āIām already suffering from the bullying and tearing down of the entire country against me. I donāt think I deserve everything Iām going through, but I hope this apology works for you all, at least, to mitigate the damage Iāve done.ā
Just read that. Some new category of lame apologies. He didnāt mention at all whether the server or restaurant deserve what they are getting. What an asshole.

āItās clear thereās tens of billions in fraud,ā said Michael Horowitz, the chairman of the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, which includes 21 agency inspectors general working on fraud cases. āWould it surprise me if it exceeded $100 billion? No.ā

In the case of Mr. Oudomsine, the Pokemon card purchaser, his lawyers argued in March that a judge should be lenient in deciding his sentence because the fraud had taken hardly any time at all.
āIt is an event without significant planning, of limited duration,ā said lawyer Brian Jarrard, who was Mr. Oudomsineās attorney at the time.
Eh. Itās impossible to push that much aid out that quickly without fraud. Did it get to a lot of people in need?
Take care on people immediately- Clean up the grifters afterwards.
Iām one of the āentrepreneurialā folks who received Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, and finally won judgment against Californiaās EDD after an appeal and a quick court case over the phone with an independent judge recently (It feels so odd to āswear in courtā on your cellphone).
According to a local accountant in San Diego, a lot of prisoners and folks in halfway houses jumped on this, which is what is causing plenty of headaches and worry for folks like artists and buskers who are just trying to make a living. While I agree with the āpay first, ask questions laterā approach, Iām still mad about all the criminal folks who made this process so much more difficult and worrisome a year and a half after the fact.
Working artists arenāt even the fraudsters, but as always, the government finds it easier to pick on people with fewer resources to fight back.
The assholes who bought houses and exotic cars defrauded the US of 10ās if not 100ās of millions of dollars. Clawing back those big payouts should be the focus, not a few grand here or there that went to people that probably needed it anyway, fraudulent applications or not.
Similar idea with the NDIS in Australia: the āNational Disability Insurance Schemeā, basically everyone pays into a massive fund, which is used to pay for accommodations and supports for disabled people. (Which is, itās not a dole or a pension, itās for paying for support workers or alterations to your house or wheelchairs, sort of thing.)
Because as soon as there is a source of money, there are arseholes trying to prove that we canāt have nice things.
Of course, the successful arseholes also have lots of money to pay for shonky lawyers, so the governing body finds it easier to deal with the increase in legitimate demand and decrease of available share of money by telling disabled children theyāre going to have to do without their physiotherapy this year.
The answer is not to shutter the NDIS. The answer is to get rid of the insurance industry suits and grey people who make up most of the governing body, replace them with skilled disabled people, and change the culture to getting rid of the thieves, the fraudsters, and the jobsworths in the bureaucracy and the service providers, and actually getting disabled people the support they need.
Of course, in a perfect world this would all be unnecessary overhead, because disabled people would get the help they need as a matter of course, butā¦ Ā»shrugĀ«
