Will Muller, a rising sixth grader at St. John LaLande Catholic School in Blue Springs, has been kicked out â âdisenrolledâ after much prayer, according to a July 19 letter from the principal, Susan Martin.
This is not because Will, who is 11, was struggling academically or did anything wrong. On the contrary, âheâs an âAâ student,â said the mother of a classmate, and liked by everybody. âMy son would say heâs the only one who never talks or gets in any trouble.â
According to the letter, heâs being expelled because his parents, Paul and Hollee Muller, have âstated both verbally and in writing you do not agree with nor do you support the teachings of the Catholic Church. After prayerful consideration and discussion among our school administration it is obvious we no longer have a partnership with you, since the values of your family are not in alignment with those of our school. Therefore, the school administration has made the decision to disenroll your child from our school.â
As it happens, the Mullers are mainstays of the parish and the school, where they are volunteer basketball and track coaches, run a Tuesday night âopen gymâ for the kids, and âvolunteer to do a lot of things other parents wonât,â said that same St. John mother, who like all four other parents I spoke to, did not want her name used out of fear that she, too, might be shown the door and left scrambling to find a new school three weeks before classes begin. âTheir whole life was that church. Itâs just wrong, and itâs going to hurt a lot of the kids.â

Hollee was vice president of the schoolâs advisory board, and she objected to changes at the school since Father Sean McCaffery became pastor of the parish a year ago.

âThe priest came rolling in hot,â Hollee said, âyanking booksâ from the school library, including one about a polar bear with two mommies and all of Rick Riordanâs work, some of which features characters who are gay, bisexual, lesbian and trans.
As Hollie herself sums up her supposed heresy, âI donât think being blatantly homophobic is a teaching of the Catholic Church.â
The Duolingo language app was taken away, according to parents, because it translates the words âgayâ and âlesbian.â CNN 10, a news source for âexplanation seekers on the go or in the classroom,â was pulled, Hollee said, âbecause the priest said we donât need the media teaching our kids.â
A third mom I spoke to said she was told that CNN 10 was out âbecause its parent company is too liberal.â She and others said Father McCaffery does not respond to concerns, âor even look at usâ who ask questions. âI donât consider myself liberal, but banning books, and Duolingo? Donât punish the child for the parent. And honestly, Hollee did nothing wrong.â
Hollee was also among those who spoke up after a teacher told her older sonâs seventh grade homeroom that girls who wear leggings might leave the impression that they are âwh%res.â

These restaurant owners should consider the liability from over serving someone who then hurts or kills someone else while driving drunk. Those lawsuits can cripple a business. Do they really want a trial where they have to admit they were relying on a 14 year old to assess the drunkenness of an adult and then be responsible for cutting them off?
I get they want cheap labor and refuse to allow in immigrants willing to work for unlivable wages. I get that they donât give a flying fuck about children. But to pretend to be outraged at drag shows and queer representation in books and then turn around and say âoh yeah, itâs fine to work a young teen to death in factories or let them get sexually harassed by adults!â Is just so so AAARGH.

And yet the GOP routinely turns the other way when pastors and priests abuse children. They want to ban social emotional learning in schools as well as consent education and sex ed. The programs trying to instill respect for others and prevent sexual assault
