The Queen Elizabeth II Meta Thread

He already is

Apparently Liz Truss just referred to him as Charles III.

Well, prior to this there was some debate as to whether he’d take a different name.

Do you trust Truss to get it right?

I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I should clarify that I had already heard Truss’ statement when I wrote that. Or read it, rather. I try not to hear her voice more than necessary.

He is really tempting fate, especially with the mood in Britain right now.

That’s more like it, thanks.

The media is implying there was some reason Chuckles might want to use another name, but it’s like they don’t want to tell us what the reason is because that might insult the new monarch :open_mouth:

Just saw a video screen usually reserved for ads commemorating the Queen…

My take, let’s get rid of the monarchy, and also all those assholes who got possession of most of this shit island via the monarchy, end of an era, no… end of this farce please.

Pffft. “$500,000 for the house. $750k for the house with furnishings, no mementos. Cash, up front.”

My reply: “No deal, there isn’t a single house in my neighborhood on the market, and I’m not looking elsewhere anytime soon. Go try to by the neighbor’s house, it hasn’t seen an ‘update’ since 1980. Besides, baseline here is now $350k, you’re not offering enough over market value for me to uproot my family. Plus, you suck, go pound sand.”

Not all of us are so easily bought. You know how when some people have kids and can suddenly, instantly imagine the absolute worst possible outcome for any given scenario? That happened to me. Sucks when thinking about my kid, but sure clarifies and prevents impulse decisions in other areas in my life!

what’s the backstory on the name? ( my grasp of the various monarchs is thin )

Charles 1st was the one who started a civil war and ended up executed. So the name has… implications.

To be fair, the 2nd one was known as “the merry monarch”, was reputedly popular, and is known for being a patron of the arts and his prodigious affairs while married, fathering at least 12 children with other women.

So,given this Charles’ history, the other one isn’t much better to remind people about.

hmmm… maybe his parents should’ve gone with “arthur”

James and Charles, Charles and James;
Those are the Stuarts, learn their names.

Charles I believed in the Divine Right of Kings, levied taxes without the consent of Parliament, married a Catholic, and went to war with Parliament. Upon his defeat in the English Civil War, he was executed by beheading.

Charles II was mostly unobjectionable, though his attempts to bring about some religious freedom were opposed by Parliament. For “reasons” he dissolved Parliament and ruled as an absolute monarch. He died after an apoplectic fit that may have been brought about by exposure to mercury, with which he was experimenting in his home laboratory.
