If you do go, and come to Auckland, visit Tiri tiri Matangi, http://www.tiritirimatangi.org.nz/ the bird sanctuary off the coast of North Auckland. You get a trip in a ferry on the Hauraki Gulf, (the best semi-enclosed waterway in existence), a packed lunch, and a guided walking tour around the sanctuary, which is on an island formed by an extinct volcano. Take a big bottle of water.
It is the only place in the country you have a chance of seeing most of the rare native birds.
