A year or so ago I was in a small Texas town and some one remarked on my name. I said my family was from the area and Polish and the clerk said in a comforting tone that I should still be proud of my heritage.

be friendly to major media outlet employees today, their careerism trajectory is heavily dictated by pretending not to see that affluent right wing billionaire ownership impacts coverage, or that chasing SEO ad engagement has taken a hatchet to any objective interest in the truth

Hmmmm. In my job I have to speak truth to power regarding design and manufacturing issues that could harm people’s health and safety, and if I get in trouble or even get fired for it, so be it. It’s part of the job. Patients first.

So at a time when honest reporting and real journalism have a huge impact on the health and safety of tens of millions of people, why do journalists get an out?

Several witnesses told the BBC overnight events were sparked by a number of children being taken into local authority care.
The full circumstances have not yet been confirmed by authorities.
In a statement released after midnight, West Yorkshire Police said “a large number of public order officers have been deployed to the location in what remains an ongoing incident”.
“We wish to reassure residents we are responding to the disorder incidents which have taken place, and that appropriate specialist public order resources are attending,” it added.

Regarding the stupid computer patch issue: the wife’s hospital has been spammed all day by fake IT people cold-calling and trying to get access to the hospital’s systems. Ghouls.

:weary: Absolute ghouls.
Everyone at my work got a warning about that too from IT. Reminding us none of our IT vendors would ever ask for credentials. A lot of what we do is really critical for vulnerable people.

We use Quickbooks. I got a suspicious phishing phone call from “Intuit” yesterday. They were asking for the bookkeeper. Wanted us to update our QBs. We don’t have a bookkeeper, we have accountants (Strike 1). I played dumb and told the guy that I didn’t understand what he wanted. He voluntarily offered to transfer me to his supervisor (Strike 2). She got on the phone and told me that we needed to upgrade to QBs 2024, and I told her that I was looking right at our 2024 version (Strike 3). I then told her that she was phishing and hung up on her.

They’ve gotten better, but they always overplay their hand.
