Top prosecutor sentenced to 5 years for covering up police chief’s assault of a handcuffed man who stole a bag of porn, viagra, cigars, and sex toys from his car

My family will forever be marked by my disgrace.

Yes, yes they will.

I’m not a fan of capital punishment for your average citizen, but if we want honest folks running our justice system? I don’t think the idea of capital punishment for anyone found abusing the system from with in is such a “far out idea” even for something like this.

These ideas are intriguing to me as well.

whose car? whose porn? LOL took me a couple of reads too

That’s one helluva laundry list…

Or simply magnified sentences for crimes committed “under color of law”.

Assault someone 4 year sentence. Assault someone while a law officer 20 year sentence…

A guy who tried to steal from me got busted when he stole a cop’s wallet. Sometimes I think the only thing discouraging theft is the possibility the police could be involved.

Your classic lose-lose-lose.

Are we sure the cigars were just-a-cigars?

I was looking for a version of “I see what you did there” with Freud and found something less fitting but far more hilarious:

At some point you start to create perverse incentives that way. When the punishment for getting caught is the maximum punishment available, then a criminal might as well go all-in to make sure they don’t get caught.

So if the punishment for (say) assaulting a cop is death/life without parole then the the crook might as well finish them off to make sure the cop can’t testify against them. If the punishment for prosecutorial misconduct is death/life without parole then the crooked prosecutor might as well continue to use all the power of their office to continue the coverup.

Not to mention that no matter how careful we are we make mistakes and until I finish my resurrection machine we can’t fix one that ends in the state murdering someone.

That’s one way to put it.

IIRC correctly Burke had been involved in some sketchy shit and got into legal trouble when he was young, well before he joined the PD.

Spota was his defense attorney, apparently favors were done and dirt was collected. Burke apparently worked for Spota’s law firm doing dirty work before joining the PD. The impression I’ve got is he was basically placed in the PD, it’s inarguable that Spota made him the Police Chief.

Spota sat at the top of a very, very corrupt political machine that effectively controlled things in Suffolk County.

Burke was known for arriving drunk to meetings, passing out in public. And once famously brought a sex worker to a search warrant. There are rumors about hard drug use, and this is apparently the 3rd time he lost his gun and badge, which in itself is a federal crime.

There were very long lived state and federal investigations into the County Government and Spota and Burke in specific. The federal end seems to have disappeared during the Trump Years.

Not really. As far I’m aware that’s mostly rooted in idle gossip from cops with no connection to or access to the actual investigation. The only reported “connection” is that Shannon Gilbert’s family claims an unnamed sex worker told them she thought it might be Burke. And they were apparently told this after the speculation was already reported locally.

Honestly the connection between Gilbert and the Gilgo Killer is pretty spurious as it is, mostly pushed by her family. Apparently Gilbert’s movements and contacts around her disappearance are well established, and anyone she was in contact with is solidly alibied for every other murder. The official cause of death was exposure due to a cocaine overdose. The only person disputing that is the same gun for hire former coroner who was telling all the papers Epstein was probably murdered despite never examining the body.

There’s honestly not a lot of details about the case out there to begin with. But I know some people who were on the federal task force for the case. From what I’m told almost all of the details out there are either older theories since disproven or plain rumor. None of the supposed suspects in the press have ever actually been a suspect, because the case has never actually had a plausible person of interest. A lot of the public info may also be mucked because that stretch of sand dunes seems to have been something of a known body dump. And there were a number of bodies found that don’t seem to be associated in anyway.

Cops are inveterate gossips though, and they tend to have a pretty incestuous relationship with the press. So when asked by reporters for info about the case they pass over the mix of old info and gossip as if it’s authoritative.

There were some confirmed details released last year in concert with the announcement that another set of remains had been identified. Apparently because some one had already posted them to a true crime discussion board. Including photos of a belt and a few other things that had previously been with held.

Suffolk County NY. Out on Long Island, about 50-75 miles East of NYC.

Wait, Hatchet Harry joined the police?

Well for one. When your boss is bringing a big bag of fetish porn and dildos to the office. That’s probably not a good thing. That shit was his work bag.

But the hook here, and apparently the reason for the torture, is that Burke left the bag with his duty weapon and badge in it in an unlocked police car in a public place. Which is a felony. The guy they beat up apparently made a statement to officers Burke could not pressure, and on tape I think, that the car was unlocked and he had not broken into it.

So the whole black site thing was about getting him to change his statement. It’s been reported that Burke had done this before and kept it quite . Apparently been reprimanded for similar things more than once. And as some one who is both highly placed in a real corrupt circle, and pretty much a giant shit show, he’s kinda the week link on this shit.

I’m not super familiar with it, but according to that wiki I linked he was accused by escorts of being sexually abusive. He also “…was reported to have blocked an FBI probe of the LISK case during his time as police chief.”

And this was not in the original coverage … why?

A generous excuse would be that some local news covered it and it got picked up nationally without any editing. A less generous explanation would be that supposedly national or international reporters just assume that they live at the center of the Universe and it’s up to everyone else to know where 42nd Street [1] is.

I can halfway forgive news aggregators like Google for repeating stories about fires or building collapses from TV stations and only identify the source as e.g. KTVK – which anyone outside of their broadcast coverage might figure out was somewhere west of the Mississippi [2] but that’s about it. Particularly annoying are regional weather warnings that don’t identify the region.

In this case, Suffolk being a common names for counties (Ohio has 88; Texas has 254.) If you (or anyone else) saw a news item from the hypothetical Suffolk County (TX, population 192) and innocently assumed NY you might be a bit annoyed too.

[1] In Phoenix it’s a 2-lane N/S street through residential neighborhoods 5.25 miles east of city center.
[2] Phoenix. Where I haven’t lived for seven years now, but since then in much smaller towns.

That’s true but it’s a long way from connected to the serial killing case.

Wikipedia is not neccisarily a great source on this. That article has been all over the place for years, at one point it was 90% about the Cannibal Cop, cause the rumor is that THEY know he did it but won’t tell us!

And that particular claim is cited as coming from here:

Which 1. is Fox News. 2. Doesn’t actually contain that claim.

Like I said I know people working with the FBI probe, the FBI was actively involved before they took over the investigation. They kinda had to be. Early on the investigation was coordinating with departments in NYC and New Jersey, and running through the FBI as there are some similar cases that might have been connected. (Turned out they probably aren’t)

I follow this one pretty actively. Aside from it being in my backyard, and personal connections to the investigation. I’ve always been a true crime nut. My whole family is, so this is like Holiday dinner table conversation.

Ask Mark?

But it’s in the first line of the linked source.

Ohio has 88 counties total. Not one is named “Suffolk County”. Same deal Texas, 254 total. No Suffolk.

This appears to be a very small town, not a county.

There are apparently 2 Suffolk counties in the US.

And one in England.

It’s also on the station mark in the linked video. Granted, a NY TV station may report on happenings in another state, but usually TV news will only mention the state and city, and not the county (because who really cares, except locals?).
