I think it’s reasonable (and common practice in a lot of countries, not just the US) to play the national anthem at the final of a national championship tournament. Even Germany play their national anthem at the DFB-Pokal final.
Plus of course international matches are a whole other thing.
I do find the US practice of playing it at every sports match at any level kind of weird.
