Hm, I still don’t quite get it. Ö and Ä have approximations - not the “proper” sound of course, but it kinda gets you there. As I said, “worst” and “hurt” are close enough to “ö” that it’s serviceable. “Ä” is not even that different from the english “a”, like the first “a” in “again”. Again, not exactly the same, but close enough. But I cannot think of an english word that would emulate the “ü” sound.
Edit: The example you used, “ew” is nowhere close to “ü”.

The u in “hurdles” is close albeit not identical.
German also has a great deal more regional variation than American. Most German speakers pronounce my given name with some variant of a hard g, but my Saxon mom says it soft, sort of like the end of “fish.”

The u in “hurdles” would sound a lot closer to “ö” for me. But I’m from Vienna, the southern german dialect here is really very different from up north. Like, the regular “a” is pronounced in a super nasal way that would barely be understandable in e.g. Hamburg.
Edit: especially in the north-east, people like to pronounce China as Schina, Chemie as Schemie. Drives me nuts.

It probably depends on the dialect. The way I speak English, the vowel sound in worst and hurt does not come close to ö, but there are some dialects of English where this is true.
Maybe I explained it wrong? It’s close-in to the u sound in legume or duty, but only in certain dialects of English. As a Midwestern American we have no sound that even comes close to ü.

We have no sound that is close to ö or ü. Maybe in certain dialects of English where “yes” is pronounced “ears” they might.

Any shows/interviews in particular? I watched The Daily Show only occasionally even with Stewart–not for lack of interest, but a TV. And a lot of times when I did, it was because somebody (probably here on BB) had shared a highlight first.
