It’s an admirable sentiment from Mayor Bowser, but it’s very easy for Congress not to pay for things in the District.
Can’t the dc mayor and city council legalize marijuana, ban handguns, tax commuters, and approve its own budget?
whoa, “shithole” is an anagram for “his hotel”
ETA: Well, and “ish hotel”, if you’re so inclined…
Why think small? a military parade isn’t good enough to MAGA. Perhaps you should try an event that would unite the whole nation.
I wonder if the kids nowadays have any idea that France was once a country that had to be paid attention to in world affairs and that French was at one time the lingua franca. Hundreds of years of imperialism wiped out by a couple of decades of the internet.
“National Victory Celebration Parade”

Yes, but fun fact : it is not said explicitly in the 1880 law because conservatory members of the parliament at the time thought it was too bloody (6 dead on the Bastille side, 100 on the commoners side, so it is a bullshit excuse if you want my opinion).
The Bastille Storming is not a military or strategic win, it was a symbolic act of rebellion against the arbitrary power of the absolute king.
So the military parade is really much a product of the 1880’s. I’m personally not a big fan, it’s an amazing show but symbolically not that great.
Hmmm…If the Trump Hotel lost water and sewer connections after tanks crushed the pipes, they would have to condemn it as unfit for occupancy. A government building, leased to a kleptrocrat and slowly filling with backed up sewage because of a poorly thought out public relations exercise… That would constitute a nice metaphor for the state of American democracy.
I was in DC for the celebration after my friends came home from Kuwait. Flyovers and fireworks. That was it.
The Trump hotel is sandwiched between USAID, the EPA, the DC Government offices, the FBI, and the DOJ. I would not wish for any of those properties to lose sewer and water connections.
There is no amount of tearing up DC that is going to be okay or helpful to the cause, guys. There just isn’t.
I’m expecting to see tanks on the White House Lawn at some point, while Trump considers whether it is worth resigning as president while he is a free man…
You know, tertiary syphilis would explain a lot about him.
Also, let’s recall that Germany rolled over everyone on the Continent, all the way up until Russia, where Russians had enough men to sacrifice, enough land to retreat on, and – thanks to Lend-Lease – enough materiel to burn to wear the Nazi invasion down, and eventually start rolling them back.
I’ve actually been thinking about the context of that “celebration” since I posted the link: At the time there was a sense that this war (and the celebration) was rolling back some of the legacy of Vietnam, for the military and the nation.
So the parade was intended to a, celebrate the armed forces’ successful completion of the stated war aims (and return home after the brief, closed-ended conflict); and b, show support for returning soldiers.
Again, just context.
Do you have a citation for this? L’Enfant’s plan (which is not what was actually built, but reasonably close) is replete with “grand avenues” well suited to marching parades.
That will have us Canadian Marketing Board Lovers shaking in our boots.
OK, its popular myth. My bad.
Well I’m glad you brought it up, because I’d never heard that one before! (And the link’s very interesting, too).
