“nonce” is also used in cryptography (not cryptocurrency, but the actual branch of applied mathematics related to code-making and code-breaking). It’s a portmanteu of “number used once”. I heard it there first, and it took a few years before I was wondering why a very dry technical term was making online discussions blow up.
