I think the Rapture is mostly American theological weirdness. The Rapture timeline @Melizmatic for example is talking about is, IIRC, created by very creative reading of the Book of Daniel and the Revelations, and copy-pasting lines from both together with little or no concern for context.
Most of the fearmongering in the 90’s was that Clinton was going to use various emergencies as an excuse to invade cities with federal agents and take away our rights. I am pretty sure that was the direct motivation for Oklahoma City bombing.
Now, all those people who were hoarding ammunition waiting for the ATF to come knocking are applauding the ATF, ICE, DHS and the rest dragging people into unmarked vans…
Yeah, I’ve been thinking about that lately. How the present moment not only totally destroys the argument that civilian ownership of guns would stop tyranny, but how it’s also a continuation of US history in that regard. For hundreds of years civilian ownership of guns not only did not allow oppressed groups to rise up and gain their freedom, but was a core part of the mechanism by which they were continually oppressed (e.g. the role of armed white mobs in the disenfranchisement of Black citizens after the Civil War).
