We are not living in ordinary political times. Great temptations are offered to a president faced with defeat to declare a national emergency, for dangers at home or abroad capable of manufacture,and thus have unchecked access to dozens of extreme powers unknown to our founders or our Constitution.
Some dismiss such concerns as improbable. But much that has transpired in the past three and a half years has seemed improbable, until it happened. Why doubt the intentions of a president who said in the White House briefing room in April, “when somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total, and that’s the way it’s got to be”?
Surely, regardless of party or candidate preference, we can all agree there is no justification for a president to have dictatorial powers kept secret from Congress, the press and the American people.

US District Judge Michael Simon’s order prohibits federal agents from arresting or using force against journalists or legal observers unless there is probable cause they’ve committed a crime.
This is a step in the right direction, and hope we’ll soon see better protections for protesters who aren’t committing a crime.
Who knows what they are up to with that, but it is unnerving. This seems to be in direct violation of rules about using the US Military against US civilians.
I know it sounds pessimistic, but I’m kind of expecting them to start inventing crimes to charge the press and protesters with before they actually decide to act right. They haven’t played fair for most of the time they’ve been in existence, why start now?
I just had a pretty nasty discussion with a family member over this, and I am completely disheartened and confused.
Two evil men, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols murdered 168 people because they believed that the powers granted federal agencies like the DEA and the ATF were far too overreaching, and that our liberties were in danger. They became cult heroes of the right-wing militia/libertarian/NRA/Boogaloo types, even if they won’t admit it.
Now… sometime in the near future, when the DEA, ATF, DHS, etc., etc., defy state governments and start kicking in people’s doors to “take their guns”, Republicans and their garbage in Congress will do nothing but cheer.
They support the election of a President that has never really been a Republican, shares none of their values, and that is hellbent to actively fulfill all their dire predictions.
We are actually watching frogs being boiled, live on television. Up is down, left is right, I have no idea what is going on.
