Over the last few years I’ve watched in horror as something like a third of Americans have come to regard their support for Trump as something so integral to their core identity that they probably can’t conceive of voting for anyone else. We are in dark, dark times.
What percentage of snap recipients are actually registered voters?
How many of those people could stay on if Trump were to not golf?
If honey isn’t vegan, then how in Dog’s name does composted animals (for surely we are animals) qualify as vegan? Isn’t giving bees a nice happy home and reproductive opportunities far beyond the Darwinian norm a good swap for some/not all of their honey? Not trying to be an ahole, just seems like there are multiple lines/boundaries. I say this as a flexitarian who owns an electric car, composts, buys 100% clean energy etc etc. OK OK, maybe not entirely an ahole?
Well, uh, I’d prefer to eat Johnson, but he’s not kosher…
Who does benefit, though, other than sadists? It’s not as though anyone’s taxes will be reduced one cent because of this. Even if someone were to use “we’ve got to reduce our spending/deficit/debt somehow” as an excuse, consider this:
EDIT: I guess I’ve just answered my own question.
On the other side of the coin, isn’t the food stamp program also a farm subsidy?
Oh right, destroy smaller farms so that they can be bought by 0.01%er corporations. Working as designed then.
The ‘math’ is so simple for the simple-minded base: Feeding the Poor = Big Bad Socialism
And they’ve marinated themselves in shit.
Since you mention that, the US – a country whose mainland has not been invaded for over 150 years – spends more than $650billion (and rising) on “‘defence’” each year, enough to provide food stamps for around two thirds of the population. Of Earth.
Have you lost your friggin’ mind!!! That would stifle the Trickle Down Economics that will save us all!!!
Do you know what’s even more stupid? Good maternal and early childhood nutrition is vital to the health of the defence force. Seriously - modern food programs in many places grew out of attempts to improve maternal nutrition so that soldiers would grow into strong and fit youths. And I don’t see wealthy “senator’s son” types suddenly becoming the bulk of the armed forces any time soon.
“Welcome to Major Ricket’s Battling Bandylegs, son; I’m sure you’ll fit right in.”
Of course, they’d find some way of fucking that up. They’d turn it in to a for-profit operation, with massive overheads funding corporate bonuses and lobbying funds.
Even if we ignore the moral aspect of this, cutting people from food stamps makes no economic sense. It’s been shown in multiple studies that the money spent on food stamps circulates back into the economy very rapidly (because of course poor people aren’t going to hoard those stamps, they want to buy food), has a positive local impact, and overall every dollar spent has a return of something around $1.5 because of the effect of economical stimulation.
So yeah, it’s punishing the poor for the crime of being poor. Cruelty is again the point.
In Canada, they’re projecting increases in food prices. (Not like it wasn’t already going up.)
Yeah, I would completely expect some of the people in this administration to intentionally mislead the president to further their agenda of punishing the poor and aid the wealthy. And he is easy to fool and a cruel bully by nature so it wouldn’t take much.
How many of the base decry socialism while still claiming to follow the example of a man who is said to have fed a crowd with five loaves and two fishes (or seven loaves and two fishes?) Let’s not forget too that the man also is credited with healing the sick – universal health care?
It is difficult to thread the line between punishing brown poor people to energize his base, and NOT punishing white rural people that ARE his base.
16.7% of American children live in a household receiving SNAP or food stamps.
This has been the most anti-child president in US history. Any one in the GOP that still supports Donald Trump is not in support of family values. This needs to be made clear to anyone thinking of voting Republican on any seat.
