I don’t think there’s a “himself”, just a cobbled together series of zingers, hate, self interest and preaching what he thinks people want to hear. It comes off more sincere than the usual GOP, but only because it’s less consistent.

Every republican considers themselves a rugged independent. His plays are to the republican, Tea Party base.
