UK Political Thread, part the second

We could make everywhere in the Commonwealth a republic at the same time, but I can’t explain further without getting a visit from some very scary men from the Home Office.

I looked it up and TIL:

  • Number of Commonwealth countries: 56
  • Number of Countries with King Charles III as the head of state: 15

I knew some Commonwealth countries no longer had the UK monarch as the head of state, but I didn’t know it was such a majority.

I didn’t do the math, but I imagine that if you measured the split by population rather than number of countries, it’d be even more extreme since India and Pakistan (1.6 billion people between them) are Commonwealth republics.

Even way over here in Australia, I’ve met a few Celtic fans. I’d be stunned if they had a different opinion.

That interview is … something.

MCCAMMON: Now, in recent years, of course, the royal family itself has come under fire. There have been some extremely serious issues. I’m thinking of Prince Andrew being accused of having sex with a minor …
MACLARAN: Well, I think we already see him working to overcome some of these issues. Now, the Prince Andrew scandal we know he has been dealing very strictly with Andrew in keeping him away from official roles.

Working? Strictly?

Someone, I think it was here in the BBS somewhere, said that any monarchy has always had two jobs:

  1. Convince the public they’re necessary
  2. Protect the wealth.

I have no information to comment on item 2, but item 1 feels like it’s not being done adequately.

He added: “No other country in the world could put on such a dazzling spectacle and it was a proud expression of our history, our culture, our tradition and also a reflection of the modern character of our country.

Jingoism like that is a reflection of being a modern country, Rishi?

That’s a very long way to say “Imperialist distraction from the current shitshow.”

Errr… if you’re into revisionist history, i suppose. As so many empire fetishists in this government seem to be.

One of those disgusting fetishes that doesn’t seem to require consent.
