Fariborz is the third asylum seeker or refugee to die by suicide on Nauru, and comes only three weeks after a Rohingya refugee on Manus Island killed himself.

Twelve people have died from injuries or illness sustained in offshore processing centres since the facilities were reopened in late 2012: asylum seekers and refugees have been murdered by guards or have died from sepsis, medical neglect, accident and suicide.

Both sides of the aisle agree that the current US immigration system is broken. It’s why immigration’s stayed a hot-button political issue and policy debate, and part of what has made Donald Trump the likely 2016 Republican nominee for president.

But the system hasn’t always been broken. Or rather, it hasn’t always been broken in this particular way.

Everyone remembers that in 1986, President Ronald Reagan passed an “amnesty” law. But what most people don’t know is that in 1996 — fresh off the heels of signing welfare reform, and two years after signing the “crime bill” — President Bill Clinton signed a bill that overhauled immigration enforcement in the US and laid the groundwork for the massive deportation machine that exists today.

The usual Australian centre-right spin is that we must make our asylum seeker processing system as harsh and inhumane as possible, in order to discourage others from attempting the dangerous crossing. It’s for their own good, don’t you see.

The far right version is that they’re all diseased terrorist vermin and the Navy should sink the boats on sight.

The centre-left ALP response is that it’s all very upsetting, but they might lose a vote or two if they actually opposed the detention system. So just make it a bit nicer instead.
