There’s plenty of corn, wheat and other grain being grown and stored in the US, why would farmers need to import grain from nearly halfway round the world?

Right. They eat grass, mainly. And SW Kansas has been hit by drought, with less than an inch over the last 300 days. (While eastern Kansas has been too wet.)
Kansas grass is drought resistant, with a deep root system, but it goes dormant. So you have to supplement it with baled hay if the cattle run out.
The drought is also resulting in a really shitty wheat crop for about half of Kansas this year. Winter wheat should be harvested about now and this quality chart shows how bad it is in the South West.
