That’s what’s so disturbing about this - the snails are a translucent tan color, what we’re seeing is the mass of parasites visible under the skin, pulsing and writhing around, having eaten out the snail’s eyestalks.

I’m guessing that they spare enough neural tissue to allow the snail to still feel them moving around. A good parasite doesn’t skimp on attention to detail.

Apparently, per the linked article, the birds dont eat the snail. They just peck out its eyes/tentacles to get the parasite. Lovely.
The tentacles grow back if the snail survives. Then it can look forward to reinfection.
