I am no sports buff, but even I can readily see the difference when watching professional competitors in the arena on youtube. Very practical in practice, yet nowhere near as fluid and graceful as Putin portrays it.

The instructors laughed because everybody in Japan seems to have a ranking in Judo; it’s just one of those sports. They also differentiate between Judo, considering it a ‘sport’ as opposed to a lot of other martial arts that are learned as strictly combat training.

That is interesting to hear. My son (10) does Judo. Apparently it’s not possible to take more then one examination and thus processed more than one grade per year in Germany.
