Exactly, through the rear window he saw the “suspect” go for the stick. It was completely possible they would jam into reverse and tink his bumper. The only sensible thing to do to stop this potential damage was to aggressively smash into every car around him. The officer would like to note that due to his quick actions he clearly stopped the perp from doing any harm to the police vehicle.
