One current Metro D.C. police officer said in a public Facebook post that off-duty police officers and members of the military, who were among the rioters, flashed their badges and I.D. cards as they attempted to overrun the building. “If these people can storm the Capitol building with no regard to punishment, you have to wonder how much they abuse their powers when they put on their uniforms,” the officer wrote.

Cruz and every Republican who cynically undermined faith in the election with baseless accusations of fraud and “concern” are worse than the mob they incited.
And Cruz, McConnell and every one of them who are now acting surprised and appalled at this insurrection are the worst of them.
Most of the mob at least “think” they’re patriots fighting for their country to right a great injustice - Because these assholes told them they were.
Cruz and his comrades are cynical, spineless and hollow shells pretending to have whatever belief benefits them the most.
They think they can get away with lighting the fuse, just because they never outright said they wanted an explosion.
And the most frustrating thing is they are probably right.
At the very least Cruz and the other Republicans who put in their baseless objections to certifying the election results should be censured and removed from office.
They are, like Trump, the cancer this mob was a symptom of.

A social studies teacher my wife remembered from high school, in Mountain View, California, was fired in 2016 for teaching a special class on fascism, which offended some Trumpie parents (and school administrators?)
A campaign by other parents and former students was necessary to reinstate him, but he immediately retired, completely disillusioned.

At least 23 people, predominantly out-of-towners, were arraigned Thursday in DC Superior Court and were released on their own recognizance to go back home, ordered not to return to the capital until further notice.
