I could see this being an amazing opportunity to show why civics matters, if teaching in a supportive school district. Even then if a portion of the class are maga teens then I’d probably not want to go to work today either.

Not all of them are bad people.
I think many of them are just people who fucked up like I did.
At first I thought I wanted to hate, that they’d all be assholes, but some of them do wear masks, just not many.
it’s hard to feel sympathy for the guy who went to jail 26 times before he decided getting kicked in the head one night by another inmate was what made him decide he didn’t want to go back, but I did feel sympathy for the guy who I didn’t even realize had a glass eye since he was 15 and his entire life he had to adapt.
I have no idea what put him in, some of them are in for stupid reasons, some of them legitimately should have been put in jail.
I think some of the non mask wearing is I’m literally inside a different reality where they suspend that. I’m not sure quite how to put it but with enough distance they seem to feel comfortable with each other. When it’s the teachers encouraging this I can’t really say much.
Other teachers make sure to have people spaced out but they don’t enforce people keeping the masks on.
Much like America right now not everything is cut and dry it’s very complicated and full of hurt and stupid. What Trump has done to America is cut and dry to me though, make no mistake- but if you can look past the insanity to what is behind that frame for some of these people I think some can be fixed. Many never can.
Some of them though who are legitimately shity people I have no sympathy for at all.

if it weren’t for the harsh way blm had been treated by police and trump - with zero repercussions for that treatment - no one would have felt bold enough to storm the castle.

im 100% convinced if the democrats can’t see it as such and work to change it now, the nation really doesn’t have that long to last.
ex. we pay almost half a billion for the capitol police
and that money did f-all. the age old practice is to throw millions more at it, when actually it’s time to #defund. if we keep propping up the systems of white supremacy how can we hope for any better outcomes?

If America learns from this that it needs more military and paramilitary protection, more autocracy, more violence directed at protestors, more prison, more charges involving vicarious liability (like the barbaric felony murder nonsense) it will have learnt the wrong, and a ruinous message.
Despite the breach of the capitol you still need to defund the police.
You just need to start taking right wing terrorism, white supremacist movements, and armed “militia” cosplayers seriously as fundamental existential threats to the United States. This isn’t just a law enforcement issue. It’s one of fundamental attitude: there is no valid reason in a democracy to consider your guns part of freedom of speech in the political arena. Carrying them in that context is, at the very least, the crime of common assault and an attack on the free speech of others.

Interesting interview with Ben Sasse ( R) NE, certified despicable human being, on NPR on the way into work this morning, in which he directly blames Trump for the terrorist acts yesterday, calls Josh Hawley a “dumbass” and otherwise really puts a point on the deep divisions in the Republican Party as currently comprised. Not at all certain they can survive as an entity, which would be pretty much karma.

A man dies at the world’s worst coup attempt, his family claimed he died of an heart attack at the rally (but not in the capitol building) and claimed he was a peace loving man but his dumbass parler posts told a very different story about that so call “peace loving” man.
