Watch Michigan GOP try to enter Michigan Capitol to submit phony electoral votes

It looks like they’re trying to hijack the name of another organization. Definitely not them:

eta: Cultural hijack.

I can think of a few supposed “Republican electors” who just attempted to commit vote fraud.

They remind me less of “desperate dudes” than of a bunch of kindergarteners who don’t like the rules of the group game they’re playing, so they stomp off and start their own game with their own rules. Hmmf! So there!

They went off the rails when they were trying to “Lie to a police officer.” The Lieutenant was calmly collecting evidence for the eventual arrest warrant. (I would love to see these guys try to explain themselves to a judge.)

Ugh, can’t these people just go and start a government in exile in Micronesia or something? I mean, that is the next logical step, is it not? Why are they putting it off? I’m sure Micronesia is very nice.

That’s because they haven’t started a government in exile there yet. I am certain that Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands don’t want them, and the other countries can just refuse to let them cross the border.

I wonder if Sealand is up for sale again…

Not surprising that Trump’s admirers are just as incompetent as himself.

It’s like that time when Hillary “lost” bigly in 2016, and Democrats everywhere tried to steal the election by submitting phony electoral votes, and sued states, and appealed to the Supreme Court that millions of dead or illegal Republicans had voted in the election, and she called on supporters to stand by and kidnap Republican governors and riot in the streets.

Oh wait… that didn’t happen? There was a fair and smooth transfer of power, with transition happening within days of the election?

Huh. Makes you think, I guess,

I think calling this a farce hides the sinister nature of these kinds of operations, and the real harm we all may face if their persistence eventually pays off. This isn’t some innocent act by very stupid people. It’s an attempt to install a fascist government and they’re just working out how to do it through trial and error.

It is a farce. Anyone buying into the notion of “alternate electors” is a garden-variety, easily manipulated idiot. As the last 4 years have shown, all it takes go install fascism in the US is a non-stop chaos machine and turning a blind eye to norms, tradition and law breaking at the highest levels of the Executive branch. It didn’t work because 45 pissed off the military. Next chaos machine can pull it off if they’re savvy enough to not shit on the military.

[not sure how I managed to hit reply while in the middle of finishing my rant]

Which is literally what they were trying to do.

I really, REALLY wish that people would take these people seriously. They are actively working to undermine democracy, and even if they fail, it WILL have long term consequences for the country. Especially if some large numbers of Republicans believe that Trump DID win and it’s being covered up.

Is this like the time when the orange turd “claimed Michigan”? Because batshit crazy wins every time?

I mean, I do take them seriously, but we did the same thing in 2000 with Gore in Florida, attempted to have our own electors go in case the Florida legislature forced their own electors in from lack of certification and a court later reversed it. It didn’t get nearly the press this had because it’s never been seen as really something that even remotely could work.

Alternate slates happen all the time, and it’s all just for political show. This year it’s getting noticed more because it’s whackadoos doing it.

Um… no. He requested a hand recount, which made sense since it was less than 1000 votes.

SCOTUS stopped the recount:

Do you have a citation for Gore trying to get an alternate slate of electors? Because I do not believe it got that far at all.

Again, this is not a political show. It’s a danger to democracy.

It does not seem like you’re taking this attempt to subvert the vote seriously. They are fully intent on making sure those of us who don’t vote in lockstep with the hard right are unable to vote at all.

[ETA] This is ONLY thing I can find on issuing an alternate slate of electors was from the GOP side, not the Democrats, who were pushing for a recount:

Not only that, but Gore conceded before the safe harbor date, so no alternative slate could even go to a vote in Florida. Which, it turns out, he likely won.

I’m not so sure we’re dealing with people who aren’t taking the threat to democracy seriously so much as they are actively enabling such a threat.

An alternate timeline for which I can find no reference.

But both sides are just the same… just the same… Everyone knows that! /s

Hence, if the GOP did it, it’s probably only because the Dems did it first, because they are the real bad guys here… Why did they make the GOP try and literally end democracy by not giving into everything they wanted at all times! They should stop trying to check notes moderately try and deal with climate crisis, ensure equality before the law, and ensure women have full bodily autonomy… /s

So just as a question: when does this behavior become a legal seditious conspiracy?
