"We live in a depraved culture" — MAGA Mike Johnson says LGBTQ teens are triggering his god

Indeed, we do live in a depraved culture; however the conservatives are steadily ageing out, so I have hopes for the future.

Because normal healthy fathers bring their own sexuality into their son’s life all the time!

They/themself

(It’s hilarious that these fundies get so triggered by ace Jesus and a non-binary God haha)

Ummm…isn’t that a good thing in the twisted worldview of super-far-right Evangelicals?

There are lots of people who lie about their relationship to porn and most of them are not trying to install a theocracy in the country. It’s the fucking theocracy I’m concerned about here. I really don’t give two shits about whether he’s lying about watching porn, I really truly don’t and am flummoxed that anyone is so spun up about something that probably millions of people lie about…

Well, Mr. Johnson, the God you claim to follow is supposed to be omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. So if He really didn’t like people being gay, He is well within His power to do something about it. The fact that He hasn’t suggests that perhaps He doesn’t hate as much as you do.

Of course, Johnson doesn’t really follow the Christian God. He worships at the altar of the trinity of Gold, Guns, and Gilead.

If God is immortal, and we’re told they are, and if God is the only God, then why would God need a gender? This simple line of questioning angers an astonishingly large number of people.

Good point. Maybe a reductivist translation of genesis 1:27 is to blame?

He doesn’t need a queer grandkid for that, he’s already the asshole at Thanksgiving dinner.

Adam was created as both man and woman, in God’s image. God didn’t take a rib to make Eve, they took half of Adam.

Amazingly, a translation of a translation of the Bible is wrong.

The biggest sign of modern America having a depraved culture is that shitty, dishonest bigots like Mike Johnson are not merely accepted in polite society, but actually achieve positions of political leadership and power. In a just and virtuous America, Johnson would be shunned for his vileness.

but…but…but…isn’t that the whole fucking POINT of Jesus et al.? Literally no one is beyond redemption because everyone is inherently sinful and unrighteous.

These dumb fucks can’t even read the ONE book they pretend to love.

The way I’ve always interpreted Christianity in terms of “why doesn’t God just fix things” is that it’s boring to be omniscient. You can do anything you want. You can make a whole planet full of people and they’ll worship you. Because you made them.

What if you give them the CHOICE to worship you, and you punish them if they don’t? Now they’re doing it because they want to, and they’re going to do it Or Else so you’ll maximize how many do it.

In that model, God makes you suffer so you can better understand why to worship him. Eww I guess. I’m sure other people can interpret this situation differently, but it’s always seemed very gross to me and it’s one of the reasons I don’t think I could ever be part of that particular religion.

This was literally the first thing I thought when trying to read the bible as a teenager - my mom suggested I try reading it because it’s extremely important to a lot of people and the culture around me and having working knowledge of it will be good when people start to throw it around. (My mom is atheist, maybe pagan.) I just couldn’t get past the first bits and take it seriously.

The Bible isn’t one book though (it’s in the name). It’s an anthology written by different authors. Ezekiel and John of Patmos had good dealers, and it shows in their writing. Maybe they should have shared some with Paul, that guy had a stick up his arse.

1 in 4 high school students identifies as something other than straight — what are they being taught in school?

That it’s ok to be yourself. Something they told Gen X and Millennials, but many of us couldn’t actually do that because of society. Despite Mr. Rogers and every other kids program about love and acceptance of people being different, a lot of stuff wouldn’t fly everywhere.

Now that Gen X and Millennial are the one with kids, more and more adults are ok with people being who they are, and allowing kids to be themselves, vs beating/shaming them into a mold.

That’s my observation, YMMV.

Yeah, I grew up in an abusive household, so I recognize that pattern. I too decided to pass on it. I don’t wish to take any anyone else’s faith, I quite recognize that it does bring comfort and support to many people; I just don’t feel a need to join in that one. (I do celebrations and rituals because they make me feel connected and mark important occasions, but I believe that feeling comes from me, not an external source.)

Ah, well, that’s often the first step to not believing in it!

Remember the conservative motto: “Be your own person! A rugged individual. No, not like that!”

It’s simple enough. An eternity of hellfire awaits those who doubt God’s infinite mercy.
