That’s my number-one reason. I almost never wear a hat, except on those rare occasions when it rains (haven’t needed a hat for this reason in Burbank in over a year, I think, since our last couple of rainstorms happened while I was stuck inside my office).
I do, however, try to remember a straw hat when I go to an amusement park or otherwise have an all-day outing in the sun. I hate scalp sunburns. But those sunny day-trips have been rarer than rain lately.
I got one of those fat heads as well. No “one size fits all” hats ever fit me, and even XXL ones tend to be uncomfortably tight when my hair is longish (which it is these days).
That certainly accounts for the edges, but does that also explain the effect along the crown, particularly where the red-and-black zigzag stands out from the yellow?
Crenquis and I immediately recognized the cropped image in the OP as the most famous fedora pic on the internet
BUT
did you know that it is the IMDB pic of the actor that was Sam’s friend Gordon from Freaks and Geeks?
These days mostly for Sun. I’m fair enough that I burn through my hair, and I generally don’t do well with heavy Sun beating down on me.
In the past brim hats were kind of a thing In the punky groups I ran with. I regularly wore a bowler until my mom backed over it in her truck. That was over 10 years ago though. I do own a nice porkpie, but I tend to look like the world’s only blonde hasid if I wear it with anything nicer than jeans so I don’t wear it often.
As best as I can tell it happens when neighboring regions have much higher luminance, like white or yellow. Red (particularly darker red) appears to be behind the high value regions.

As a 7 7/8ths hat wearer, there are no hats I’ve found under a couple hundo that are anywhere near “fashionable” when worn by me. My current hat is a floppy faux-straw cowboy hat that was $50 bucks. Even XXL hats typically only go up to 7 1/4 - 7 1/2.[/quote]
Yeah, this just annoys the crap out of me too. Though I’ve found that Duluth Trading Co XXL hats run about 7 3/4, which just fits me. They’re a good source for fishing and general outdoor hats. But nothing stylish and certainly not anything you’d call a dress hat.
weirdly, I had to take that crap-tastic pic because apparently I wear the brim “wrong,” When I went to google to find a pic, I found out this is how they come from Kangol, the maker:
which explains why this model is called the “Player,” I guess, but I don’t think I can pull that off and besides, the brim would collect water. It’s wool–GLORIOUS WOOL!–but some images show knit versions, which is pretty much Kangol’s MO for all their stuff. I don’t wear it for sport, though, just warmth–with style, of course ;^) The way I wear it, it looks like a bucket hat in a way; factory stock with brim all the way up is like a bowler; and with back-up-front-down it’s a ringer for a trillby. This hat is very durable, I’ve had it for at least 5 years and I heap abuse on all the stuff I own. Being wool, the water resistance is excellent. @fiddlingfrog, so yeah, warmth and water repelling in the cold months. no hat in the summer for me. A year-round bike commuter, the brim is essential since raindrops will stab your eyes at over 5mph.
I’ve noticed this a long time ago on some forgotten audio editing app that showed bright red and blue waveforms on black. They always seemed to be strangely out of the picture plane, with the blue looking farther away than the red. And this was on a CRT monitor. Maybe it has something to do with the old “cool colors recede, warm colors pop” color theory cliché?
Couldn’t find the exact image, but I can see a weaker version of the same effect on these random images. Can you?
I work in bush regeneration (kinda reverse forestry; we restore degraded wilderness areas). A wide-brimmed hat is required PPE in my job.
What that means, however, is a cloth hat that is as indestructible as possible. Leather hats are too hot, felt hats are too fragile. Not a Fedora or Trilby to be seen.
