It’s actually in a way, medical. The largest way of spreading warts on feet is, surprise, being barefoot. And trust me, they hurt! I don’t know the stats on malls, but gym showers are the big one, which is why they suggest shower shoes.
Hookworms and other nematode infections can result from walking barefoot outdoors. Also jiggers in the subtropical US.
I would say it shouldn’t be disregarded entirely; however, does making assumptions based on no facts or evidence help a constructive and healthy dialogue along?
By all accounts this young lady never once mentions race as a factor. She stated “other girls” were dressed similarly. She could very well have identified their ethnicity(ies) but did not. She stated she was told she was dressed provocatively. She could have said “I was TOLD this but I SUSPECT it was that”. She didn’t. She posted openly on Facebook, she had no fear or concern of reprisal as she didn’t hide anything.
For anyone to make assumptions beyond what she is stating I feel diminishes her. I’ve reminded my kids that I will always advocate for them but no one is as strong an advocate for them as themselves. This young woman did so with grace and dignity in my eyes.
Not purulent. Prurient. Unless, of course, he had purulent interests, which is too disgusting to even go into. (Sorry; I’m an editor. I get to do this.)
Back when I dwelled on PlayStation Home, my avatar sometimes was a black woman. Unsurprisingly, I got the n-word thrown at me in a pm. Perhaps more interestingly, a pm I received was simply “bitch”, something I never got with my other female avatars, even when they were much more scantily clad.
Oh, I don’t; I’m just acknowledging that while prejudice and bigotry do exist in some form just about everywhere you go, there are different levels of it depending upon the locale.
This I know; I have buddies in the UK and other parts pf Europe.
I am not shocked, exactly. But kinda interesting the detail about “Bitch”. I can’t imagine how it would have played out on Xbox Live.
Lastly, I kinda miss Home. Had real potential, which was squandered.
Yeah, Home was fun. And most of the time people were quite polite, there.
You do understand this razor cuts in both directions, right?
Why, because she didn’t mention racism as a possibility?
What does that have to do with the topic at hand?
And speaking of the topic at hand (and of your kids, since you keep bringing them up), do you tell your kids to never even suspect racism is a factor when something bad happens to them, until they have 100% solid evidence that it is? I ask because that’s what your basically telling the rest of us we should do.
But they’re both wrong. And while it’s difficult to control people’s beliefs it is somewhat possible to monitor and guide the police officer.
Edited to add apostrophe.
I would dispute that there is no evidence. There’s no direct evidence in the specific details of this specific story we have been told, but that story is taking place with American society as it’s backdrop and American society is steeped and formed by racism. To assume no racism because we have not been informed of any yet is to assume a perfect society rather than ours.
Indeed. It’s so over the top!
Plus, i would suspect a decreased likelihood of security listening and following through.
And of course people of color already carry the burden of the thing in the first place, a problem not of their own making.
Of course there’s evidence. The woman looks Black. That is evidence. It’s not complete, or conclusive, but to say there’s NO evidence would just be wrong.
Did you read the comments at all? Some of us are arguing precisely that.
And Welcome to boing boing…
Well then i’m glad i’m disputing it.
there isn’t even circumstantial evidence. Unless you have access to some information or story by the mall security that I did not see.
How would you like the world to be. Everyone assuming the worst in one another and making unsubstantiated accusations? Or everyone treating one another how we would like to be treated ourselves? Given the benefit of the doubt and asked about our motivations and allowed to have a dialogue.
I know which one I think this young lady is going for and which one I’m teaching mine to go for.
