Hope they name it New Amarna.

I’m just enjoying a real page-turner “Seeing Like a State” which goes into Brazilia and Chandigarh and the broadly anti-social outcomes of Le Courbusier-inspired urban planning (Jane Jacobs called it urban taxidermy). I hadn’t made the connection to Amarna… thank you!

How fitting that this exercise be repeated by (absent a record of other candidates) the originals.

The change in nomenclature is backed by officials of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. They argue that the name India was introduced by British colonials and is a “symbol of slavery.” The British ruled India for about 200 years until the country gained independence in 1947.

If that’s true, and not a regional/political name meant to exclude parts of the citizenry, then yay for them.

They keep saying things are about British colonialism (such as any sort of criticism they get about violent ethnic cleansing), but in reality, their goal is the elimination of all non-Hindus from the national body. There really is nothing to recommend this particular brand of Hindu chauvinism that seeks to erase Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians from the body politic.

This is all very similar to the language used by Serb and/or Croatian nationalists when they discuss the Ottoman period of history - they blame the “terrible Turks” for imposing Islam on them (despite the fact that they very much kept their religion) and as such it’s a “foreign” element in the body politic to be expelled. Hence the particularly brutal nature of the wars in Bosnia, which had a higher instance of intermarriage.

This is the Bank of England making it plain, but most of us live in countries where it is equally true:
