I’ve wondered about that – one would imagine that, upon establishing a military dictatorship, the top-ranked officer would be the head of the government. And yet Mengistu was a colonel, so was Gaddafi. And Jerry Rawlings was at a lower rank than that, a flight lieutenant. I’m guessing that their respective superiors (i.e. generals) couldn’t be bothered with a job as big as running the country, and delegated it. Based on that, presumably a military dictator would answer to a(ny) superior officer, but I don’t know how this shook out in practice (e.g. whether some general ever called Mengistu on the carpet for anything).

OTOH if the generals weren’t on board, then perhaps they get overthrown in the coup, as well, but then I’d expect that Colonel X or Flight Lieutenant Y, seeing the vacancy, would be free to promote themselves to general.

Sometimes (well, one time) it was the sergeants.

Well the usual narrative is that the generals are all corrupt and are in the pocket of the corrupt politicians.

Just look at the US to see how that works out. Higher generals move over into executive positions in the government and then move over into senior executive roles in the arms industry (sorry, defence contractors) where they can leverage their contacts in both the military and government and politics. You can see how a revolutionary might view that. Rawlings’ thing was that he was as senior as you could get while still being a troop as far as I remember. Ghadaffi also was a combat veteran of some kind.

In the US the retired colonel class is favoured for clandestine arms deals. They don’t seem to get the revolving door military industrial political complex golden ticket quote the same way and instead have to run arms for the pentagon in places they cannot admit it. Like Libya, Iran etc.

Just as long as “Bohemian privates” aren’t involved.

I wish I could explain, but I am pretty confused.

Important enough to have acquired loyal followers, but not important enough to be involved in the previous government?

Under the old British system, the colonels headed regiments-- which were independent in terms of recruitment, training, etc.

Which might imply that the generals commanded agglomerations of regiments convened for a specific mission, and the loyalty of the troops to specific generals wasn’t ingrained over decades.

Do you think the people who are backing him are going to back off too? That’s part of the problem with these movements, that even if the “dear leader” backs off, sometimes, it’s far too late.

I read that some of his allies and people who supported him at the beginning of his term had “jump off the ship”, accusing him of being a bad president who fooled them. After yesterday´s events, part of his hardcore acolytes got really angry. Last tuesday He promised to fight, but yesterday he asked former president Temer to help Him writing a conciliatory letter to the Federal Supreme Court, especially to his great disaffection, Minister Alexande de Moraes.

Lucky for him, the opposition doesn’t seem to be very interested in opposing him. Not even the Workers Party (PT) seems to support the impeachment. Despite this, a large protest against the government is scheduled for next Sunday. Let’s see what will happen, as political analysts say Mr. Bolsonaro popularity is dwindling little by like, like a popsicle in a hot summer evening.

As Mr. Bolsonaro backs off threatening the Supreme Court, His supporting base got “short-circuited”. “Game Over”, they say.
