Speaking as someone who has a snake – not a venomous one – I can tell you that if you don’t manifest fear (which can be picked up by animals of all sorts as being potentially aggressive/dangerous), there’s no reason for a snake to bite. You’re too big for them to eat, so it’s only if they feel they have to defend themselves that they’ll take the risk of potential damage (for example, one or both of the fangs getting pulled out in the struggle).

It would be just my luck to encounter a snake that’s poor at picking up social cues.
