The saddest part is that if we had just one mass shooting every Tuesday it would actually be a staggering improvement over the status quo. As @Missy_Pants noted above, the U.S. averaged more than one mass shooting a day this year.
For some for some of the shooters, mental health help would have absolutely helped the situation. Newton, Colorado Theater, and the California one who hated women are thee examples of people obviously not stable.
They are Enabling it.
This round of Republican candidates are playing to the Hate. Itâs okay to be racist. Itâs okay to be a Christian nutcase with effed up ideas. We embrace you and we want you to vote for us so we will give lip service to your effed up ideas. All you little twisted Conspiracy theories, all your ugly little hateful prejudices.
Your effed up ideas should be free. Go forth and shoot somebody.
How would improved access to mental health services stop shooters who never even sought mental health care?
I guess we could do mandatory mental health screenings for all citizens and involuntary commitment for those who show warning signs, but that seems like a much more serious violation of civil rights than some sensible regulation of gun ownership.
You mean the kid whose family had plenty of money and had been seeing therapists since he was eight years old? And then his parents contacted police and they came to his apartment and yet he was STILL somehow able to buy guns, despite a lifelong history of mental issues?
It wouldnât but perhaps people who cared for these people could have seen the warning signs something was wrong and gotten them help, vs enabling them like the Newton shooter.
There is no perfect system, of course. Which is why I say, âYou canât always stop crazy.â If the wonât get help and hide it well enough from others, you can do what ever and not get caught.
Even people already on the radar get away with literal murder. Saw documentary on the Cleavland Strangler. Holy cow the number of people who ignored this guy and allowed him to continue is staggering. The smell was repeatedly reported. Anthony Sowell - Wikipedia
My point being is that if youâre angry and hate people, youâre not going to get âmental helpâ because it isnât considered an illness unless you turn yourself in saying youâre having thoughts of harming other people and canât help yourself.
If youâre a self-righteous fighter of baby killers, you arenât mentally ill. Youâre just an angry person justifying killing based on your ethics. Otherwise, every soldier we send into the field expecting to kill people would be diagnosed with mental illness.
Derail? Itâs as valid as a call for more laws, which would be at best a band-aid that wouldnât stop the blood from seeping out. As if the solution for so complex problem has ever been passing a simple law. Calling for an analysis of the cause and reasons is the only way to understand and solve a complex problem.
