He looks like heā€™s about to tug on his forelock.

Which would be quite interesting to watch.

The ICE pentagram is only used for some very dark magic.

Apparently Trump and Mitch are arguing about calling witnesses for the Senate trial. Mitch thinks that would be M.A.D. One story said that Mitch holds all the power there. I wonder.

Mitch is the Senate majority leader, not the Senate president pro tem (Charles Grassley) or optionally Vice President Pence. Senate majority leader wasnā€™t even a thing until the early 20th century. Mitch isnā€™t in the presidential succession list. Unless it was slipped into an amendment, itā€™s not in the Constitution anywhere, certainly not in the part covering impeachment.

Does Mitch have real power, or does it just depend on the Senate rules and traditions, and how hard are they to break? (Counting on gentlemanā€™s agreements and traditions is a non-starter in the Age of Trump. Heā€™d kick those over in a hamberder-clogged heartbeat if it pushed things back a week.)

Grassley might not do anything, but he can be replaced any time that Pence wants to attend. A gap in the separation of powers, but itā€™s never been a problem because of the tradition of non-attendance of the Vice President since day 1. (Besides, under the original rules, the VP would have been Hillary Clinton.)

Iā€™m the kind of guy who, when someone says ā€œHow could this possibly get any worse?ā€, says ā€œGood question. Let me think about it.ā€

It would be a Republican circular firing squad, but as long as Trump thinks it would keep the nasty people away a bit longer, itā€™s on the menu.

Iā€™m pretty sure this image of circular wrist clasping/handcuffing is meant to represent how ICE wants people of all colors to snitch on their neighborsā€¦

Why couldnā€™t the republicans call him during the hearings?!? Thatā€™s the REAL crime here!!! /s

ā€œ The president reportedly decided against moving forward with the plan after watching a television program on government and told other White House officials the next day.ā€

Thank you, School House Rock!

Technically an impeachment trial in the senate is presided over by SCOTUS. In this case it would be Roberts. He holds the primary power

I donā€™t think McConnellā€™s legal power really matters that much. If there are enough Republican senators who want a thing to happen McConnell canā€™t ultimately stop them from getting it. But Republican senators wonā€™t go to the bathroom without asking Mitch first, so Mitch doesnā€™t need a constitutionally defined position to have power.

Iā€™m not sure this is true, and I think it completely misjudges Trumpā€™s appeal to the people that Trump appeals to.

Itā€™s easy to think, ā€œWouldnā€™t people, all other things being equal, prefer a president who seems emotionally stable?ā€ But first of all, I donā€™t think all other things can be equal, and secondly Iā€™m not sure the answer is yes. If you think you live in a crazy world, then you might think you need a crazy person at the helm.

Thereā€™s a movie scene I remember that I saw flipping through the channels one day, I donā€™t even know what movie itā€™s from. Ving Rhames is in an underground parking lot standing at a distance from two guys with guns. Rhames says, ā€œIā€™m going to count to three, and you guys had better put your guns down.ā€ The two men laugh, and remind Rhames they have guns and Rhames does not. ā€œOne.ā€ One of the men asks, ā€œAre you crazyā€ and Rhames says, ā€œYeahā€¦ psycho. Two.ā€

Reasonable people back down from fights to avoid getting into fights. I donā€™t think there can be a reasonable authoritarian stongman. And the authoritarianism of the American public is where Trump gets their support.

What laws might the Republican congress have passed if their relationship with Trump and with Democrats was one of amicable horse-trading instead of being terrified by the leader? Would those be popular pieces of legislation to run for re-election on?

And if Trump were not ā€œnutsā€ they would have lost their first election on the Access Hollywood tape. That was recoverable only by a person is incapable of admitting wrongdoing, who reacts to shame by always fighting, never by hiding.

I donā€™t think we want to think that our elections systemically put unsuited people in power, but Iā€™m pretty sure they do. Itā€™s not just America, itā€™s happening all over the world. Boris Johnson wouldnā€™t be on the verge of victory in the UK if they were not a staggering idiot.

As always, more complex than it might appear, and in some ways, more subtle and evil than first glance might suggest.
