Because like almost every other republican, he cares more about winning than he does about democracy. The whole fucking party is rotten, and very few people in the party have enough backbone to stand against the authoritarian turn in the party. In fact, folks like McConnell are fine with the authoritarianism, so long as they can cloak it. His ONLY real problem with Trump is that he’s too ham-fisted.
