Bars fill up with thirsty patrons after Wisconsin court strikes down stay-at-home order

Plus enough firearms to equip each of them many times over.

Don’t you mean Places never to go.

  1. Wisconsin.

Never forget about Klaus, the hapless forklift driver.

[Apologies for pointing out the obvious.]

The problem isn’t exactly the bars, it’s all the social isolation bubbles being popped. If anyone in that bar (those bars) has the 'vid, then anyone who interacts with anyone who was there is rooted. All the gas station staff (and anyone they subsequently interact with), the McDonalds staff (and anyone they interact with), their families, their workmates, on and on exponentially.

So, it’s May 14th… (does very complicated math - 14+ 2 weeks = uuuuhhh… 28?). Let’s keep this thread open until the 28th and see where we are.

“Robust”

Sham legislation is a sham.

(Edit to add: health and safety in the workplace legislation is basically how we managed to get rid of smoking in bars and restaurants: Sure, smoking is legal and we can’t stop YOU smoking, however employers have a clear legal responsibility to protect their staff, and exposing them for hours at a time to a smoke filled environment is inconsistent with that responsibility. Therefore, while in principle smoking in bars/restaurants may be legal, in practice no operator can allow it.)

I am reminded of alcohol laws in America, our national Byzantium.

This list of Dry Counties has a lovely colorful map:

“Alcoholic beverage control state” – you might think it’s a debugging tool for HAL-9000, but no:

And here’s something I just learned for this post:

The Twenty-first Amendment (Amendment XXI) to the United States Constitution repealed the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which had mandated nationwide prohibition on alcohol; and – the cool part – The Twenty-first is unique among the 27 amendments of the U.S. Constitution for being the only one to repeal a prior amendment, as well as being the only amendment to have been ratified by state ratifying conventions.

Bottom line: American Booze is a crazy patchwork of local fiefdoms, which if one could dig up the history would probably reveal generations of corrupt prohibition agents, corrupt public officials, and corporate organized criminal enterprises.

I think every possible fix for mass stupidity inherently comes with a big collateral damage footprint.

If you’re into learning more, I recently listened to this 6 part podcast series on Prohibition. It’s well done!

Every December 5th I raise a glass to celebrate the repeal

one of the evilest things about the wisconsin supreme court’s decision is the gop appointed justice who lost his seat soundly last month - but of course gets to vote against the will of the majority of wisconsinites anyway

all those people who showed up to vote him out, risking their own health in the process, just got completely ignored

A public health official should stand outside the bar, taking down the name and contact info of every patron. Put the info into a database, and when they show up at the ER with symptoms it’s “back of the line for you, dumbass”.

[Hyperbole, to be clear. This wouldn’t be safe because these spoiled morons would just go home and keep spreading rather than cede their place in line, especially if an “undeserving” person got to go before them.]

Ladies & Gentlemen, set your count down timers at 14 days, then we’ll check the stats again. I suspect a pattern will be evident by that time, given that most COVID tests take a few days to process.
