Christianity Today: Trump should be impeached and removed, 'morally lost and confused'

That is terrible and I’m sorry that happened to your cousin, your friends, and you. I don’t know what religion they (the people who beat up your friends and disowned your cousin) were practicing, but I know it’s nothing of which Jesus would have approved.

You also know that not all Christians are modern evangelical, right? It’s a sect, and sect with some pretty specifically shitty stuff bolted on.

Another falling domino?

https://www.mormonwomenforethicalgovernment.org/official-statement-from-mormon-women-for-ethical-government-on-the-house-impeachment-vote

Any president or leader who forces political support and fails to honor and protect the free and legitimate elections on which our republic rests has lost the moral right to govern. By attempting to compel Ukraine to announce investigations benefitting only his re-election efforts, President Trump forced every American taxpayer to become an unwitting contributor to his political campaign and a supporter of his re-election.

From that article…

“species of scam”

Somewhere in the bowels of evangelical basements are yellowing charts depicting a tree with of all the different species of scams and branches of scams that they are ok with.

Very few dead branches I’m sure.

I do happen to know what religion they were practicing. I also agree that it’s not one that Jesus would recognize, which I why I left it behind.

I’d submit that’s true for every group of assholes that take simple messages of love, compassion, forgiveness and basic humanity, and pervert them for their own purposes.

They are not “perverting” those messages they are completely leaving them out.

Many would call that evil.

What does that even mean? Trump is horrible, so obviously God is working through him? This logic is different than the one I grew up with.

Again not neccisarily “falling”. A lot of Mormon’s have been pretty down on Trump. In large part because Mormons tend to be very concerned about freedom of religion (real freedom of religion not the “I get to be biased against gays” kind).

Mormon areas have been the big anti-Trump Republican strong holds since the 2016 primaries.

The majority still voted for the guy though.

None of this stuff is really new or a change. I haven’t seen anything indicating it’s catching on outside the small portion of the Religious right that was already on board. Impeachment seems to be making it more visible though. Part of the issue is that these folks aren’t the ones getting called up TV to discuss Trump. Its mostly the Evangelical leaders who bend over backwards to excuse him and the GOP politicians who will shout about how he’s Jesus.

Awesomeness.

Hah. As one does. I myself will choose a wad of spaghetti over a hammer any day when I have nails that need nailing. I, like God, appreciate a challenge.

Yep. Makes sense. Only God’s hand damages things. That glass I was drinking from just wasn’t holy until God reached down a put a crack in it. I mean, sure, it looked like it fell off the table, but that had to have been the will of God, making my drinking container so much more than it was before. Specifically, leaky.

I think their “logic” goes something like this:

God made humans
God made humans imperfect
Trump is human
Trump is imperfect
∴ Trump is evidence of God’s manufacturing process

(plus)

Jesus will return when the world ends
When the world ends, then Jesus will return
Trump will hasten the end of the world
∴ Trump is helping Jesus to return

(equals)

Vote Trump

MOD Note: Hating “All X People” is generally not a good stance to take. It’s how we get “Hate all Nazis = Hate all Germans forever” and the reciprocal “Not All X” conversations that distract from the real conversation: Hate all bigots and bigotry, NOT “Hate that which is different”.

To that end, please refrain from trying to generalize in this topic given the fact it it is already a hot-button. Narrowly construe your criticisms so we don’t devolve into false equivalencies and meta-discussions about generalities.

Thanks.

as they say in the church, “faith succeeds where logic fails.”

You can think or you can check. Cause major Evangelical leaders aint been quiet about the whys.

It goes like this.

Trump is literally anointed by God to do his work on earth. Those chosen by God this way can not do wrong or commit sins. It may look like they are, but these things are neccisary for God’s plan. So they can not be bad or sinful.

The role of a good Christian is to be subservient to such people. And to criticize them or act against them is to act against God and do the bidding of Satan.

Its a whole weird theological thing that’s taken over the bulk of the Evangelical movement. Comes out of The Family’s (the National Prayer Breakfast folks) ideas about the powerful being God’s representatives on Earth and ideas about subservience to the powerful. And Prosperity Gospel’s claims that material wealth and social standing are rewards given to the pius by God. And thus wealth and conspicuous displays of wealth are proof of piety.

So roughly Trump’s actions aren’t bad, they are holy. He does not need to be excused or justified, because these are God’s actions. His policies don’t matter, because he’s executing God’s will. And that he is rich, and he is President, is proof of all that. Criticizing or resisting is sinful. And voting for anyone else is unchristian. Democrats are doing the work of Satan by not enthusiastically participating.

The apocalyptic stuff is in there, as that’s the plan God is on about in a lot of cases.

And there’s your answer. (Mark Galli is the editor of Christianity Today whose name is on the editorial’s by-line.) It’s similar to a republican congressman or senator who’s retiring and suddenly finds the courage to criticize trump.
