Former President Jimmy Carter told family that as he approaches his milestone 100th birthday this fall that he’s holding on to vote in the presidential election.
“I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris,” Carter told his son Chip this week, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Harris is still planning on showing up for the Sept. 10 debate hosted by ABC News that the Trump campaign agreed to before President Joe Biden dropped out of the race — even if she is the only one on the stage.
Trump, after refusing to provide a clear answer on whether he would debate Harris, announced on Truth Social that he had arranged a Sept. 4 debate to be hosted by Fox News. For weeks, he had been suggesting that ABC News is biased against him, and that he preferred to work with the right-wing Fox network.
In a statement, Harris campaign spokesperson Michael Tyler said: “Donald Trump is running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to bail him out. He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he already committed to on Sept. 10. The Vice President will be there one way or the other to take the opportunity to speak to a prime time national audience.”
“We’re happy to discuss further debates after the one both campaigns have already agreed to,” Tyler said, adding, “Mr. Anytime, anywhere, anyplace should have no problem with that unless he’s too scared to show up on the 10th.”
Harris’ newest adviser, David Plouffe, said it was “cowardly” for Trump to make new debate plans.
“Now, he seems only comfortable in a cocoon, asking his happy place Fox to host a Trump rally and call it a debate. Maybe he can only handle debating someone his own age,” wrote Plouffe, best known for steering Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign to victory.
People have been prematurely writing obituaries for that man for many, many years now. He officially entered hospice care way back in February 2023. This article from August of last year said he was in “the final chapter of life.”

If Harris ends up debating ‘an empty chair’ (as opposed to an ‘empty head’) perhaps a paper mache effigy of the orange blob can be made out of the 900+ pages of the project 2025 plan for the destruction of U.S. democracy and referring to chapters of that nightmare could form the basis of the event. trump is doing his best to distance himself from that hated horrific vision yet we all know that he’d just go ahead with it if he were to get back in.
