the article doesn’t mention how they determine the numbers. and when numbers jump so quickly like that… it usually means something about reporting has changed. not actual incidents. i’m a bit skeptical, i guess.

Probably good reason to be. I re-read the second part of the article with less tired eyes (had to skip the disturbing shit) and it seems like the article’s function is to build support for an online safety bill.

it’s rough because that stuff does really happen. it’s just that sometimes the numbers obscure more than they reveal.
( it reminds me a lot of stranger danger where supposedly tens of thousands of american kids were being kidnapped by strangers every year, and the actual number was more like a hundred. most kids who are reported missing are dealing with repeated custody issues with parents, or living in unsafe home conditions, and things like that )

Scratching is definitely not a good thing here. You will only peel your own skin off while they meander to safer pastures.
Once got a call to the PICU because a kid had “tongued out his NG tube.” (Which legitimately happens) Only problem was, there was no NG tube. It was a roundworm he had coughed up, as mentioned in the article. I gathered the 12 inch long “specimen” and sent it to the lab for Ova and Parasite exam. Got a call back from them. “Very funny.”

Or we could save taxpayers money by not giving the cops military grade equipment like they’re some kind of occupying army, and investing that instead into a system that focuses on preventative measures and restorative justice. Fewer crimes, fewer human rights abuses, fewer taxpayer dollars being funneled into reactionary responses to crimes that have already happened and… I guess… accomplishing very little. But this is Florida, so the bare minimum requirements of civilized society do not apply I guess
