As soon as Trump quoted from “Two Corinthians” on the campaign trail, that should have raised a red flag with the religious folks that Trump was a phony baloney. That and the fact that he has five kids with three different women.
How had I never heard of this guy Bakker before? Seeing the surname, I first thought there to be one too many letter K’s; after reading more about him, I’m now convinced the spelling is actually short a K.
I think some of those that previously would have rioted for Trump (recall the primary threat that “maybe people will riot if I, Trump, do not gain the support”) will now breathe a sigh of relief that they would have an out. For Jim Bakker, its one fraudster sticking up for his fellow fraudster friends and similar interests. Someone he can relate to.
Trump went to Norman Vincent Peale’s church growing up. It’s a short theological trip from there to prosperity theology, which is what Trump follows today. The pastors who preach such nonsense mostly describe themselves as evangelical, but it’s a sub genre of evangelicalism.
So what are the chances that Mueller gives the information that he has gathered about shady real estate deals to the NY State prosecutor? After all, that is where Trump was based and I believe that is where his business is incorporated…
And in a bigger sense, I think that “evangelical” support for Trump shows just how morally bankrupt many of them are. His “spray-on Christianity” look faker than his tan. His pandering to bigotry would seem to be a big part of his appeal. Their religion looks more and more like a collection of grievances and prejudice, an “us vs them” zero-sum-game rather than seeking Gods forgiveness and mercy. It seems like many of these churches have become primarily a form of “virtue signalling” by an arm of the Republican Party that has increasingly doubled down on “identity politics.” The party has stoked the flames of white “flyover” discontent until it has led their party and the country into the black hole of “Trumpism.”
If we weren’t talking Bakker and someone just asked me, “Do you think there would be riots if Trump was impeached?” I think I’d say, “No, I don’t think so” but I don’t think I’d be willing to put more than $5 on that.
I take the continued existence of horrors like Bakker and Pat Robertson as near-conclusive proof that there is a God. Quite clearly, God wants nothing to do with them either, and is putting off as long as possible the day when He has to meet them face-to-face.
