Karen who can't believe she has to wear a mask to enter a supermarket confronts store manager

Well, there was someone of that general mindset came up with a solution…

It’s more the way it is now than it’s ever been.

White people have privilege in our society (all of us) based on our skin color. She’s capitalizing on that privilege. It’s accurately describing what she’s doing and how she’s allowed to do it. :woman_shrugging:

Do you HONESTLY believe being called a “bigot” in our society is the worst thing that can happen to her? Fuck that. I’ve been called MUCH worse in my life. People of color suffer much worse than I’ve ever experienced, too.

Mea culpa, then; but in my lived experience, entitlement like that usually is rooted in systemic bigotry; the first person I ever heard call someone ‘a Karen’ was another Black woman.

But then again, that’s all a bit of moving goalposts since we originally started off discussing whether the term Karen is misogynistic or not.

My point was and still is that it’s not intended to be; used among Black people, the term specifically refers to a type of White woman who revels in weaponizing her privilege.

The majority of Karen memes involve calling the police on POC for doing normal, everyday things. That’s why the meme is a generic for bigotry, even if it’s not the case in every instance.

This is the problem when you get all your information from Faux News. You then assume that the rest of the world agrees with you when in fact you hold a minority view. Thus, you post something on your social media platforms and expect people to agree with you.
Then the ridicule starts.

Though, if you were going though said things being exposed to COVID would probably be far worse in the long run. If you have a medical condition that prevents you from wearing a mask I expect this is a better long term solution than arguing with a store manager:

I expect her condition is being full of extreme bullshit and self entitlement and too much long term exposure to Fox News.

Well, over here, they’re Susan; different name, same entitlement.

Think of it as evolution in action - nature’s way of culling the stupid.

Is that you Eric?

I never suggested that white people don’t experience white privilege in daily interactions. I’ve said just the opposite. And as I said above this isn’t about being “fair” to this woman, who doesn’t exactly appear to deserve much sympathy after such a display. But I do see a potential issue if terms like “bigoted” and “racist” are routinely thrown around every time one white person acts like a selfish or entitled jerk to another white person. The risk is that other white people will start to take those terms less seriously, so that when you’ve got clear cut demonstrable racist behavior it’s hard to use language that effectively conveys the seriousness of the behavior.

By the way, I’ve visited many other countries, some of which don’t have the same history of race dynamics as the U.S., and people sometimes acting like entitled jerks is not a uniquely white American phenomenon.

Rubbish, you can’t be racist to White People!

Yes, this is the sovereign citizens plucking law-type words out of the aether, out of context, because they think the law is some sort of witch’s coven and you can cast whatever spells you want if you just know the right words.

For example, invoking “HIPAA”—a word some people have heard, but don’t know what it means, other than it involves health care or something. Really, neither sovereign citizen nor store owner knows what it means, so there’s an empty, frivolous threat of a fine or some legal action for noncompliance that neither side knows is frivolous.

Again, acknowledging reality of race in America and of white privilege isn’t the problem. THIS is why we can’t FIX our racist systems, because there are many, MANY people who believe that being called racist is as bad as systemic racism. It’s fucking accuracy! That’s all. No one is going out hunting women with asymmetrical bobs and an attitude. No one is shooting them for no reason. No one is denying them an education, access to health care, jobs, basic fucking dignity. This woman IS NOT REMOTELY BEING OPPRESSED. At all. She IS trying to put the lives of her fellow man in danger. She HAS weaponized her race and gender to try and get what she wanted (and thankfully failed).

Racism has at least two facets (Maybe more, there are others here that have more authority on this subject that I do). But at a minimum, the racist believes that POC have less rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The other facet is that the racist believes they have more rights than a POC. You can’t believe one without believing the other.

Sealions leap to defend a person like Karen, saying she didn’t use the n-word or try to lynch someone so she can’t be called racist. But ignoring health regulations in a pandemic, caring guns into government buildings and screaming in the face of cops is flexing that other side of the racist coin. “I’m not a POC so I can do whatever I want”.

We obviously don’t know from her little speech what she might be referring to b/c she claims that HIPAA prevents her from disclosing her condition to the manager. This, of course, is total BS. HIPAA prevents certain disclosures related to medical conditions, but not in the way she’s pretending.

I worked as a clerk in a hospital radiology department during college. The lowest default setting is basic doctor-patient confidentiality. Nobody except the patient, their doctor, or someone with power of attorney is allowed access to patient records or images, and must sign for responsibility of them if checked out of the library.
A patient can talk about themselves all they wish, but the caretakers of that information are tasked with responsibility for the safekeeping of that information.

Saying someone did something bigoted or racist is not the same as calling them a bigot or a racist. It is possible to do something terrible without being a terrible person. It’s all in how you react to your awful behavior being pointed out to you, and whether you modify your subsequent behavior. Whether this woman’s actions in this particular instance were bigoted, somehow I think her reaction to being called out (when she inevitably does something like that) would be…less than constructive.

MOD note: We have a “no doxxing” policy here. That means you’re free to link to news reports containing information, but please don’t compile your own researched list of information (regardless of source) on its own.

There is a small but important distinction between re-reporting what other orgs have reported, versus hosting original research here on the BBS.

Thanks.
