Karen who can't believe she has to wear a mask to enter a supermarket confronts store manager

We didn’t make them. Civil litigation did.

The bigotry is in the attitude that any worker (read: servant) must do what she wants, because she said so, and she’s the one who owns pays them.

Ok, that’s fair I guess. When people were using the word “bigot” in this conversation I kept hearing “racist,” but classism and elitism do fall under the broader definition of bigotry whether or not there’s explicit racism included.

I saw a guy with a tracheostomy getting stopped by employees at Stop N Shop because he didn’t have a mask. He used his electronic buzzer on his throat to tell them “I breathe out of this hole in my neck, so this scarf is my mask.” They let him shop, but I wondered if it was because they were just too embarrassed to debate the issue with him.

Anyway, I’ve heard it from my wing-nut postman that some radio personalities are promoting this idea that you just claim a health issue and they can’t force you to wear a mask. I think if people are going to abuse a law designed to protect the truly handicapped then the only recourse is to just give out the tickets, and let them argue it in court, and if the court finds in your favor then you receive a card to show the police next time it happens: “I really DO have a health issue that prevents me from wearing a mask.”

Too bad the world that we all inhabit isn’t; full stop.

This whole conversation tangent was started specifically about labeling people as “Karens.” It wasn’t about someone saying that someone “pulled a Karen in that situation” or “acted like a Karen.” To the extent that the term “Karen” is meant to describe a bigoted person, I think it’s reasonable to infer that calling someone a “Karen” is labeling that person, not just labeling their behavior.

But maybe I’m reading too much into this.

You are, to the point of derailment.

I agree with you on this, and, to me, there is a subtle age-ism as well, which makes me pretty uncomfortable with the whole ‘Karen’ thing.

I literally was going to try that as part of my “Disaster investing” efforts. [Investing in stable companies who are affected by the pandemic, but likely to recover quickly]

Service Corporation International, the leading owner of graveyards and funeral homes
“Since 1962, we have brought efficiency and economies of scale to the deathcare industry while maintaining a high level of service.”

But the stock price didn’t drop enough in from January to make it worth my while.

Here is more on that:

Maybe something that would make skin too sensitive to wear mask? Like extreme sunburn with blistering, or some kind of chemical burns? Either way it would be probably noticeable at first sight.

Yes. Some people with certain sensitivities really cannot tolerate face coverings (just like I can’t wear anything that puts the slightest pressure on my throat). Even I have to be careful what the fabric is made of, because I have severe texture sensitivities. People with severe asthma or other breathing disorders.

Wacklefucks like this make those people’s lives harder. Because no one believes the person with a genuine condition and thinks they’re just faking it for some nebulous, undefined “benefit”.

She’s an anti-vaxxer, and this is from her bio on a Flat Earth webpage:

Shelley Lewis is a passionate truther, a licensed holistic health practitioner, a certified lymphologist, a vegan chef, photographer, and co-director and co-producer of The Plane Truth Documentary.

Sounds like a 24 Karat, brass-plated, flaming, board-certified wharrrr-garbler

Yep. I have been sparring with a few of these folks who insist the government has “No Right” to force you to wear a mask.

I mean, they do though! There are many examples of stuff like this. Hey remember when we put all those people in internment camps because of their Japanese ancestry? Fox News wants you to remember how that was legal. I mean, not right now they don’t, that would be inconvenient. But, like, before Christmas they definitely wanted you to remember that.

But masks to protect your fellow citizens is apparently beyond the pale. Got it? Internment camps for citizens because of their ancestry: OK. Masks to protect you and your fellow citizens: Not OK.

I’d be perfectly happy to see ‘Shelley’ become the generic name for all Karens who are too precious for PPE. With all the ‘Know your meme’ sit s referencing this particular Shelley.

Ah, but you’re forgetting the sheer privilege of this class of individual.

I live about 10 min from this store, and have been in it (it’s an expensive and creepy place where each soup can on a shelf has a perfectly aligned label when compared to it’s neighbors…).

Around here, about 1/2 of the melanin deficient folks aren’t wearing masks. I chalked it up to right wing conspiracies about Corona or the always not understandable “I’m so F-ing rich that a virus/wildfire/mudslide/earthquake would never happen to me…”. I did my most recent bout of shopping at a local “Ralph’s” and was horrified. This was after visiting the nearest large Japanese supermarket that had everything absolutely locked down and under control. Gave me a false sense of security. Going to try my local family owned middle eastern store today.

(UPDATE: Middle eastern store has their shit together as well. Employees behind plexi, you’re not allowed to approach the register to pay (credit card only) until you’re called (and this is after unloading your groceries on the end of the plexi). Employees all wearing masks, gloves, and face shields. Everyone in the store was wearing masks, and observing distancing (even the white folks there who are usually Russian immigrants [because my middle eastern grocery has a ton of specialty Russian, Asian, scandanavian etc… products].

But down here “behind the Orange Curtain” it really does seem to break down along ethnic/racial lines how seriously people are taking the pandemic.

Note that Lupus sufferers are recommended to take extra precautions, such as wearing masks, particularly around other people with Lupus as the illness increases the risk of blood clot formation. One of the ways the CoViD-19 kills people is by forming lots of small blood clots.
