There is a reason that The Smiths are a lot better than Morriseys solo stuff. Even though I’m not really a fan of The Smiths. Without Marr Morrisey has not been able to produce anything as good as in the Smiths. I am sure he knows this. Johnny Marr on the other hand has done wonderful work together with excellent people like Billy Bragg and Kirsty Mccoll.
As much as I loved The Smiths when I was growing up (and when Morrissey was more of an eccentric before his heel turn into a full on fascist) I can totally appreciate how they could be pretty polarizing. With Morrissey’s warbling twee earnestness and jangly backing music, it’s certainly not for everybody. (And I don’t get why people try to force others into their fandoms. )
It’s kind of funny, when I was young and in my formative years I took their stuff really seriously. It really spoke to me. I still enjoy enjoy their stuff from time to time but it now comes across more as a kind satire than anything. I mean with songs like “Girlfriend in a Coma” and “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” it’s hard to take it seriously.
I’m hip. I didn’t make her listen to Einstürzende Neubauten or Test Dept: I figured she wouldn’t like it. I’ve always changed the music when someone wasn’t enjoying it, and wish more people would do the same.
I know who I want to DJ on my next road trip
I needed a cigarette and a hand fan after that gif.
Maybe even a cold shower.
Here’s a link to my ÏṀⱣЯƐṨṦÏṼƐ* playlist on youtube. I built it years ago, and only recently thought to look up each song on the tube of you and generate a playlist there…but The Ads! The damn ads fuck up the segues, which is really irritating.
Check yr msgs in a minute, once I figure out again how that works.
We took a croc-spotting boat ride on the Black River in Jamaica, and the pilot let me hand him one of my reggae/dub/ska mixtapes. After a few songs, he checked the track list & asked me, “Whose show dis?” I didn’t immediately catch on, then realized he thought I’d taped J’can radio. I chuckled and said, “I built it, so I guess it’s the Me show!” When it ended, he asked for another, which I happily produced.
*Not ego, just accuracy
I take no responsibility for the music of course, but I do know how to pick 'em & create a proper flow with the great stuff I find.
Same for me, growing up in Maine. Songs spoke to my own sense of isolation and introversion. Shame he grew up to be a raging fucking trashfire vile fasci-con. In this instance, I can NOT separate the artist from the art, since the art was so vital to me as a young adult. Both have gone into the shitter, I’ve outgrown them.
7/8s of the Smiths parents were immigrants to England. Including both of Morrisey’s…
Someone has to point it out!
i’ll still listen to the Smiths or his solo stuff when they shuffle up on my music server, but it’s not like i have actually bought anything he’s done in a decade or so. he’s definitely a loathsome individual now. but the early works still make me smile.
Oh, that’s right… I forget that his parents were from Ireland…
Well to be fair he has a point: in making him English they certainly did diminish British identity.
ETA
to be clear, I mean that he is a stain on Britain and doesn’t represent anything that British people I know stand for.
When Weird Al makes a tweet that your new song is not his parody, you have really become a cartoon of yourself.
Eeeww!! Pass me the drinkin’ bleach, I gotta wash my eyes with it.
They did Ireland a favour though.
Big mouth strikes again.
I’ve always thought of Morissey as Johnny Marr’s singer.
Seriously, Marr makes gorgeous soundscapes that sound exactly like him and no one else I know has been able to duplicate his style. Morissey is someone who I always at most put up with, as the cost of admission for getting to hear Marr’s sound.
The Daily Mash is on the case:
England’s sacrifice will never be forgotten!
Curry pot pie with a pint of bitter. Mmmmmm
