I like her music and I admired that she performed and produced her first album herself. At the time she was younger, and there wasn’t much more to it.
But artists who become or show themselves to have abhorrent view and continue to do so; I choose to no longer actively support
I won’t delete what I have already, I won’t leave a room where it’s playing, but I will consciously avoid them when it’s something I can do, as agood enough stance.
There are a whole rash of artists who fall into this category.
It’s a bit tautologic, I admit, but my experience has been that fascists are, well…
…dumb.
Sure, they are often cunning, and many are good at certain puzzle solving tasks, but the truth is they don’t like thinking for themselves. They would rather just follow orders (and boss others around), without all the second-guessing and wondering if what they are doing is right. Critical thinking is something they avoid. So to me, being a fascist is an indicator that the person in question is an idiot.
Which is just my personal take, my personal disdain for authoritarians.
“The idea that white ppl r superior can only exist if u ignore history.”
What the fuck is up with writing like that? Is it some affectation, to try to come off a certain way? Just some sign of spending way, way too much online?
You’d think if you’re trying to write something serious, that people will pay attention to, you’d take a second to write out “people” “are” and “you”.
It might be, but the way that the author of the PageSix article included the quote in the body of the article makes attribution unclear.
She did later tweet “It is only those who refuse to look at history who think anyone superior or inferior and I will happily die on this hill” but obviously that doesn’t make up for the earlier pro-nazi rhetoric. It’s probably not worth our mental energy to try too hard to discern exactly what’s going on in that brain of hers.
Ah - gotcha. That makes more sense. I thought Grimes was trying to explain herself somehow with that.
Either way, point taken that the ‘language’ or grammar or whatnot probably shouldn’t be the most important thing (even when it happens to grind my gears).
Things like Irish culture, or American-Irish culture, or Midwestern US culture, or what have you, are real and not racist. But when you are talking about “white culture”, you’re defining it by opposition to all those Other, Too Brown Inferior People. Same with “white heritage”.
Definitely that was my surface level read the first time I saw that… “Good for her.” But again, look at the collection of all white dudes in the Oy uniform brawling and you don’t see protofascist?
Honestly? Depends on the beach (which is context of course), but I definitely hold space for the idea. There’s a lot of that look in edm and while I don’t assume I don’t assume-not either. As a foreigner to European culture it’s a harder read too.
Honestly why not both? People can be a lot of things at once and even more over time.
She can be genuinely confused, poorly educated, lazy about learning, have an authoritarian fetish and idealize rich white dudes, victim, victimizer, and kind of a white supremacist who doesn’t “identify” as such but who is also primarily concerned about marketing her “brand” in such a way as to not alienate white supremacists.
I’d wager that nobody gets to be a billionaire without being a massive asshole to some people (probably whoever does the actual work that makes them rich). Sure, it’s not aimed at all people all the time, but that doesn’t make them not-assholes.
what if, instead of being dumb, they’re people who’ve decided they like power over other people and will do anything to get it? worse, what if they’ve done the critical thinking and realized the things they need to do to get ahead?
sometimes smart people like to be cruel. and because they’re smart, they’re able to get away with it for longer than anyone else. same thing for fascists.
dumb fascists don’t scare me. it’s the smart ones that cause me existential dread.
