QAPLA': General Star Trek thread... for all your Trekin' needs

It’s probably for the best. No one needs to remember Paris’s racist wise-cracking to Chakotay.

or the second season of TNG.

More importantly for T’Lynn, Rutherford has both washboard abs and a memory that can be erased. The latter being helpful so things won’t get weird/emotional between them.

Or DS9 season one.

When I first came here, it was Just The Original Series. Everyone said I was daft to to do 26 episodes in a season but I did it all the same, just to show them. We only got 22 episodes in our second season. So I built a second show. That only got 20 episodes in its first season. So I built a third show. That burned down, fell over, and only got 15 episodes for its first season. But the fourth one, that got 26 episodes out the door for seasons 1 and 2. And that’s what you’re going to get, Lad, 5 more seasons of 26 episodes and a movie or two. The strongest franchise in the industry.

Season 5 No GIF by Paramount+

I’d say that of all the trek series from that era, DS9 had the most solid first season… I mean, have you seen Duet? Just that episode alone was worth it… they did tend to lean heavy into police procedurals, tho.

Certainly the first season of DS9 was uneven, but towards they end they were hitting a direction… Yes, even with the one where they get stuck in that game…

I think we’re just talking about falling short of the more than 25 episodes measure, not quality of the shows (except for my dig at Paris)

D’oh!!! Sorry, @akbar5656!

I’ll leave my rant for the ages, tho… I will die a DS9 partisan!

Agreed 1000% Even with Move Along Home. (we are Allamarain Stans in this house) So much in season 1 of DS9 is vital to the rest of the show in ways the other Treks never dreamed of. When I hear people say “oh DS9 is great, but you can skip season 1” I shake my head in disbelief. Look how much we get out of it:
Kai Winn
The Baseball
The funky clock Sisko makes
the start of Bashir and Garak
the start of Bashir and Miles
the start of Odo and Troi
our first real deep dive into Ferengi culture

For me the only low point in s1 of DS9 is “Q-Less” (outside of the Sisko Punch)

No worries at all! A free spin at the Dabo table for you!

EDIT: I did find it fascinating/remarkable that when I searched for DS9 in the gif search it was 95% gifs from “Past Tense”, 4% Swear treks and 1% other episode stuff.

“ We likely owe the “Before Time” label to an episode of the original Star Trek series broadcast in 1966, in which the crew of the Enterprise encounter a planet populated by children who survived a man-made plague. A young girl name Miri (whose name also serves as the title of the episode) explains how the planet’s grown-ups, known as “Grups,” disappeared: “That was when they started to get sick in the Before Time. We hid, then they were gone.””

Curzon: Well, it got so that every piss-ant Klingon punk who thought he could swing a Bat’leth would beam into town to try out the great Curzon Dax. I must have killed more Klingons than Kahless himself. It got pretty gritty. I started to hear the word “P’takh” in my sleep. Then one day, I was just walking down the street when I heard a voice behind me say, “You have no Honor mister!” I spun around… and there I was, face to face with a six-year old kid. Well, I just threw my blade down and walked away. Little bastard stabbed me in the ass. So I limped to the nearest bar, crawled inside an Andorian whiskey bottle… and I’ve been there ever since.

And no one needs to see Chakotay’s caricature of Native Americans. Written by a white guy pretending to be Native American.

Yeah. I always winced when he said “my people…”

And no vision of how Native Americans might relate to interstellar travel or living on terraformed planets?

Would their ships look like silent running? Would they not want to live there on terraformed planets? Would they not wish to serve on starships for years? Perhaps only for direct flights to where they’re going? What would that future look like?

There was that one late season TNG episode where Wesley joined The Traveler full time. But I can not say if it was any way less/more offensive than Chakoty’s schtick.
